About the Job
The NOvA Far Detector Lab Safety Officer/Researcher would orient, train, inspect and advise lab safety. The lab safety officer will ensure a safe working environment for all areas of the lab, all employees, and all guests and visitors. The candidate will draft new and modify existing safety policies through documentation, collaborating with University of Minnesota and Fermilab Environment, Safety and Health safety representatives. The ideal safety officer will have a good foundational understanding of safety in the workplace. Additional training will be provided regarding the NOvA building, NOvA detector, and DUNE trial assembly areas.
The employee in this position will work a ten hour/four-day work week, Monday through Thursday. There are paid rotating on-call weeks which can be switched with other employees, but participation is mandatory. Being called in pays overtime.
Job Duties
This position will be responsible for the following duties:
- 60% Lab Safety Officer: Ensure lab personnel, guests and visitors are compliant with safety regulations and lab specific protocols are established and followed. Continually update safety records and procedures. Orient, train, inspect and advise in matters of the lab safety objectives and methods. Create new and modify existing safety policies compliant with University of Minnesota and Fermilab Environment, Safety and Health safety representatives. Ensure a safe working environment for all areas of the lab, all employees, and all guests and visitors. Regular inspections of the fire system, fire extinguishers, safety lights, and other safety-oriented inventory.
- 15% DUNE assistance (Next generation detector): Assist with DUNE Trial assembly work. Work with others to recognize safety-oriented aspects of assembly when working with DUNE components.
- 10% Detector troubleshooting: Assist with issues related to the server room such as replacement of servers and hard drives. Assist in changing detector components when needed.
- 10% Maintenance and Repair of building equipment: Assist with maintaining and repairing general building systems and hardware. Including inspections of roof top heating and cooling units, and low-pressure steam humidifiers. Assist in the installation and repair of water discharge systems including seasonal shut down.
- 5% Cleaning: We don't have custodial staff and require people to clean up after themselves. Other duties of a similar scope as assigned.

Requirements
Required Qualifications: BA/BS with at least two years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal six years. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Able to work independently and with a team. Strong verbal skills and able to give presentations.
