Position Highlights
The Colson Lab is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a Researcher/Scientist IV position in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. Dr. Brett Colson’s NIH funded laboratory focuses on understanding the molecular interactions and structural dynamics of proteins involved in regulating contraction and relaxation of cardiac and skeletal muscle. The lab aims to determine the culprits of contractile dysfunction and remodeling in heart failure and muscle disorders, and then apply these insights to design novel therapies. The lab uses biophysical approaches, such as time-resolved FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) with site-directed probes on muscle proteins such as actin, myosin, and myosin-binding protein C (MyBP-C), to assess mechanism of action.
The incumbent will design, organize, manage, and lead one or more complex research projects in line with Dr. Colson's research objectives. Additionally, they will oversee the day-to-day operations of the lab including supervising other research staff. They will participate in the collection and analysis of data and be tasked with co-authoring or co-presenting the results of the data to internal and external stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead complex research projects aimed at discovering mechanistic insights into the roles of sarcomeric proteins in the development of cardiomyopathy, muscle disorders, and other diseases using techniques including, but not limited to, optical spectroscopy (e.g., FRET, fluorescence lifetime, phosphorescence anisotropy), electron microscopy, muscle mechanics, cosedimentation, and microscale thermophoresis.
- Formulate and evaluate current and new methods, criteria, techniques, and technologies for muscle structure and function studies.
- Manage the laboratory and oversee daily operations of the projects and supervise support personnel.
- Act as team leader for lab staff. Design and provide trainings to lab staff as necessary.
- Data collection, data analysis, assemble figures and contribute and co-author research publications.
- Assist PI with acquiring grant funding by participating in writing grant proposals process and acquiring of pilot data.
- Contribute to maintaining regulatory compliance, including writing and submitting IACUC protocols.
- Design and implement lab policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in a related discipline required.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience is required.
