The Licensed Practical Nurse works under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and reports to the surgical clinic nurse manager. The LPN is responsible for observing, recording and reporting changes in the patient's condition, as well as assisting in the development and revision of the patient-driven holistic care plan for life. The LPN is a member of the surgical clinic healthcare team.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required.
- Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed. Exceptions include health care education in the military service.
- Licensure: Active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade:
- GS-05: Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; or graduation from an approved school and one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility.
- GS-06: Proficiency in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties:
- Makes observations and thoroughly documents care and the patient's response.
- The LPN performs, reports and documents assigned nursing care in the Surgery Clinics, including, but not limited to:
- Oxygen therapy
- Transporting and labeling lab specimens
- Medication administration to include IV medication if certified
- Clinical alerts as indicated
- Check expiration dates of meds and supplies
- Delegated procedures and treatments
- Documentation and vital signs
- Assists with minor procedures, including obtaining and arranging necessary equipment, positioning patient, ensuring comfort and privacy
- Monitors patient during the procedure
Adheres to standards of practice and safe techniques in preparation and administration of medication.
Demonstrates competence utilizing special equipment needed to perform job duties.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives and strives to elevate the practice standards in the clinic.
Maintains confidentiality of electronic, written and/or verbal patient information.
Maintains a work environment that honors diversity.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm
