Job Description
This is a full-time position: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm
Position Summary:
To assist the Supervisor, Laboratory Access in the performance of laboratory duties, which include but are not limited to specimen processing, specimen problem solving, adding of testing to specimens, answering and triaging all incoming inquiries in numerous areas. Research and resolve any production errors or problems while escalating when necessary. Train and develop new and existing staff. Oversee day-to-day operations of specimen handling and sorting.
Essential Job Functions:
- Maintains all aspects of processing and handling of all specimens, routine and STAT, in an accurate, efficient, timely manner.
- Readies specimens for placement onto analyzers, ensuring that the barcoded label is properly affixed to the specimen tubes.
- Handles all send out logs and research for specimen requirements for all reference labs and arranges critical specimen handling and complex transportation arrangements as needed.
- Utilizes necessary computer applications to collect office collected specimens in the LIS; print labels and reference laboratory requisitions as needed.
- Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, although not directly assigned, that are within the scope of ability.
- Maintains that all new hires are adequately oriented, and that training is documented for the tasks required.
- Enforces and follows all laboratory safety rules and reports any possible hazards to the Lab Manager.
- Aids in processing all laboratory test requirements and specimens quickly, efficiently, and appropriately.
- Assists with ongoing Special Projects and STAT requests for mishandled specimens.
- Assists all laboratory staff and leadership with additional duties as needed.
- Creates VERG, RISK reports as needed.
- High level of attention to detail with strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Performs all responsibilities independently with no direct supervision required.
- Demonstrates competence by utilizing LIS for all applicable functions to perform job duties, including downtime procedures.
- Maintains laboratory area in an orderly fashion, free of unnecessary clutter. Keeps area stocked with supplies.
- Demonstrates good judgment with problem solving skills. Takes appropriate action to resolve issues regarding problem specimens/orders.
- Adapts work schedule to meet emergency staffing needs.
- Keeps Supervisor informed of all lab activities and personnel problems.
- Ability to perform diversified duties within specified time limitations required.
- Ability to organize, problem solve, set priorities, and use critical thinking skills required.
- Demonstrated customer service, team player skills.
- Proven work experience as a team leader and ability to motivate team members.
- Basic medical laboratory skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
General Job Functions:
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Physical Job Requirements:
- Dexterity of hands and fingers.
- Endurance (e.g., continuous typing, prolonged standing/bending, walking lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling).
Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements:
- Associate’s Degree/Health Sciences related degree preferred.
- 2-4 years related work experience required.
- Knowledge of Standard Office Technology in a Windows-based environment preferred.
- Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, required.
- Moderate-High level Computer skills required.
- Standard Office Equipment (Phone, Fax, Copy Machine, Scanner, Email/Voice Mail).
- Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) experience required.
Environmental Risks:
- Possible exposure to infectious specimens, communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a laboratory environment.
- Chemicals, Chemotherapy, and Fumes.
- Latex.
Travel:
- As required for operations, client and personnel meetings, training, and conferences.
