Job Description Summary:
The Lab Manager will oversee projects and manage the daily operations of the lab, ensuring optimal function and safety. This role is responsible for coordinating lab resources, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, and managing quality assurance processes. The Lab Manager also plays a critical role in study design, data analysis, and outcome monitoring, while supporting the Principal Investigator (PI) in strategic planning and research design.
Job Duties Outlined
- Oversee laboratory projects to ensure they meet deadlines and objectives.
- Manage day-to-day lab operations.
- Provide guidance, support, and oversight to lab personnel to maintain a productive work environment.
- Assist the PI with coordinating lab supplies, repairs, preventative maintenance, quality assurance, and quality improvement processes.
- Serve as the lab safety officer, ensuring compliance with biohazard, chemical waste, and biosafety protocols.
- Manage quality assurance activities for specimen collection, handling, processing, and shipping.
- Participate in setting research project goals and developing the laboratory work plan.
- Contribute significantly to the planning/design of studies, including protocol development, data collection planning, database development, and statistical analysis.
- Interpret data, monitor outcomes, develop modifications, and provide data to PI.
- Participate in developing long or short-term goals and strategic business objectives.
- Supervise lab equipment, supplies, and inventory management.
- Maintain monitoring of laboratory freezers.
- Write and maintain SOPs and guidance documents to improve lab operations.
- Manage research compliance, including IRB, IACUC, and IBC requirements.
- Assist with development of budgets, pricing, and manage study-related expenses and revenues.
- Possess advanced knowledge of lab practices and direct and teach others in lab practices.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related disciplines. Experience may substitute for degree on a year for year basis.
Work Experience:
- 3 years' experience in a lab setting supporting basic and/or translational research.
- Experience with specimen handling.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Master's degree or higher in biology, chemistry, or related disciplines.
Work Experience:
5 years' experience or more in a research lab setting.
Skills
- Excellent time management.
- Multi-tasking, organizational, computer and interpersonal skills.

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
Pay Range:
$58,000.00 - $86,000.00
