We are actively recruiting for Homeless Shelter Associates to support the day-to-day operations of our emergency shelter, making an impact where it matters most.
We are actively seeking Homeless Shelter Associates, Community Life Coordinators, or anyone with a background in Community Life services to become part of our dynamic team. Reporting to the Community Life Supervisor, the Homeless Shelter Associate plays a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless operation of Denver Rescue Mission Emergency Shelters, overseeing the diverse activities that unfold within. This encompasses extending a warm welcome to guests, upholding safety protocols, responding adeptly to emergencies, and functioning harmoniously within a collaborative team. The Homeless Shelter Associate supports all Denver facilities, and this posting is for all Denver facilities.
Who are we? Denver Rescue Mission serves people experiencing homelessness and poverty through emergency services, rehabilitation, transitional programs, permanent housing assistance, and community outreach. Since 1892, we’ve been changing lives in the name of Christ by meeting people at their physical and spiritual points of need, with the goal of returning them to society as productive, self-sufficient citizens.
Responsibilities:
Safety
- Ensure the security and safety of the Emergency Shelter and guests during the shift. This includes appropriately ensuring guests are free from drugs, alcohol and weapons, handling difficult guests.
- Contact police, ambulances or detox as needed.
- Manage volunteers and/or program participants by directing and assisting with various work readiness efforts within the Emergency Shelter, ensuring that they are properly trained for their duties.
- Distribute emergency clothing, hygiene items, etc. in support of the needs and dignity of shelter guests.
Facilities
- Ensure the Emergency Shelter is cleaned according to the established standard. This includes daily cleaning, removal, dispersion, or storage of all clutter, trash, parking lot trash, sidewalks, etc. Ensure bedding is ready for daily pickup for laundering and ensure that it is present when arriving to work each evening.
- Track durable goods needs for the Emergency shelter, ensuring that sufficient blankets, toiletries, etc. are on hand and ready for use.
- Through nightly inspections of the Emergency Shelter, generate a list of work orders for presentation to the Community Life Supervisor.
- Ensure adherence to the facility opening, bedtime, wake up time, and shower schedule.
Other Responsibilities
- Manage the “support team” of shelter guests, who assist with setup and teardown, cleaning, etc. at the Emergency shelter.
- Enter appropriate information in SCRIBE as needed.
- Bring all issues of concern to the attention of the Community Life Supervisor.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
- Occasional lifting up to 35 lbs., bending, and climbing stairs.
- Work with individuals who are experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental illness, and a myriad of other issues related to homeless populations.
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Affirm the Statement of Faith.
- Abide by the Employee Handbook.
- Strong communication skills both written and orally.
- Strong desire to provide ministerial assistance to those we serve.
- Ability to hold appropriate and Biblical boundaries and accountability with those we serve.
- Ability to resolve conflict professionally and respectfully while maintaining composure under pressure.
- Strong Christian ethic with ability to work with people of diverse cultural, educational, and religious backgrounds.
- Ability to read, remember and follow precise policies and procedures.
- Basic knowledge of Windows software applications.
