Summary of the Job:
A Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with specific education and training in the care of the neonate and infant. NNPs are employed by St. Tammany Health System (STHS) for the purpose of enhancing the quality of care for at risk or critically ill neonates/infants. NNPs work in collaboration with, and under the supervision of the Medical Director and approved staff neonatologists, in association with the Women and Children’s Services Assistant Vice President, NICU Director, NICU charge nurses, staff nurses, and other members of the care team in the planning, implementation and evaluation of medical and nursing care. Major areas of responsibility include: primary medical management, emergency stabilization of critically ill neonates and infants, orientation of NNP new hires, staff development and education, parental education, and discharge planning. NNPs participate in the development of and collection of data for outcome measures. They manage the critical and non-critical patients in the NICU and Newborn Nursery, and participate in multidisciplinary rounds. NNPs provide 24 hour in-house coverage for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as well as coverage for high-risk deliveries. They are required to work nights, weekends, and holidays. NNPs demonstrate actions consistent with St. Tammany Health System’s “Code of Ethical and Professional Behavior” as duties are performed on a daily basis.
Minimum Qualifications:
Successfully completed Board Certified Nursing Program. Masters Prepared, 1 year Level III NICU experience as a neonatal nurse practitioner required, 2 years preferred. Current Louisiana Registered Nurse License (RN), Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) Licensure in Louisiana (APRN). BLS and NRP required upon hire. Resuscitation certifications may be through any International Liaison Committee on resuscitation (ILCOR) provided courses such as but not limited to: Ochsner Health System, American Heart Association and American Red Cross. The ILCOR course must include a manikin check off.
Eligible for limited prescriptive authority in Louisiana as approved by St Tammany Health System.
Competency validation will be required for all NNP procedures specific to the role:
- Chest tube placement
- Endotracheal Intubation
- Lumbar Puncture
- Needle Thoracotomy
- Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter Placement (PICC)
- Peripheral Artery Puncture and Cannulation
- Removal of Thoracotomy Tube
- Suprapubic Bladder Aspiration
- Umbilical Artery Cauterization (UAC)
- Umbilical Vein Catheterization (UVC)
- Retinal Examination with Ret-Cam
Physical Demands:
Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 50 pounds is required. Must be able to work with a moderate level of noise.
