The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Rutgers University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position focusing on observational studies of white dwarf supernovae with Prof. Saurabh W. Jha and in collaboration with Prof. Or Graur (University of Portsmouth). The successful applicant will engage in research to understand the astrophysics of these explosions using late-time infrared spectroscopy with JWST and late-time optical and infrared photometry with HST, all supplemented by ground-based observations.
Relevant experience in the analysis of optical and/or infrared photometry and spectroscopy, or experience studying supernovae, is highly desirable. Independent research will be encouraged, including access to Rutgers’ 10% share of the Southern African Large Telescope.
The position is for two years starting no later than September 2024, offers a competitive salary and benefits, and is renewable for a third year if mutually agreeable. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics prior to appointment.
Applications should consist of a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publication list (submitted as other document), and a brief, 3-page description of research interests and experience. Applicants should also arrange for three reference letters to be sent on their behalf via Rutgers Job Post website. All materials should be submitted online via https://jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/213195. Complete applications, including letters, received by December 1, 2023 will receive full consideration.
