Job Summary:
The Nurse Residency Specialist is an informal leader responsible for creating a healthy learning environment in which new graduate nurses can fulfill their highest professional potential and efficiently progress through novice to proficient RN competency. The Nurse Residency Specialist serves in the critical role of coach and mentor to assigned nurse residents and international nurses within their designated ministry. They implement system level guidelines and programming with the goal to socialize and enculturate nurse residents and international nurses into SSM Health and promote participant retention.
Job Responsibilities and Requirements:
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves as an instructor and facilitator of nursing residency classes and experiences at the system and ministry levels.
- Participates as an expert clinician in nurse residency program development and enhancement.
- Utilizes integrative learning approaches to assist with clinical reasoning and skill development of nurse residents, including case studies and simulation.
- Utilizes appropriate adaptive technology to develop personalized learning plans for nurse residents.
- Collaborates with preceptors and nurse leaders to ensure progressive assessment and monitoring of nurse residents and international nurses.
- Provides coaching and mentorship to preceptors and assigned nurse residents that is consistent with a culture of mutual respect and trust. Works closely with preceptors to assure smooth transition from student into the professional practice role. Educates preceptors to assess, validate and remediate competency of learners. Collaborates closely with clinical educators.
- Collaborates with department leaders in selection and ongoing evaluation of preceptors.
- Works schedule conducive to nurse resident schedules including afternoons, evenings, nights and weekends.
- Applies the existing body of evidence-based practice and scientific knowledge in health care to nursing practice, ensuring that nursing care is delivered based on patient’s age-specific needs and clinical needs.
- As an SSM Health nurse, demonstrates the professional nursing standards defined in the professional practice model. Uses the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide response to the current and evolving health and nursing needs of patients and patient populations.
- Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree in nursing
EXPERIENCE
- Three years' registered nurse experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Constant standing and walking.
- Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
- Frequent reaching, gripping and keyboard use/data entry.
- Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
- Frequent use of hearing and speech to share or receive information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
- Occasional use of smell to detect/recognize odors.
- Occasional use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships.
- Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
- Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
- Occasional lifting/moving of patients.
