AGENCY BACKGROUND:
MercyFirst is a not-for-profit human and social service agency that has been serving children and families in need since we were founded by the Sisters of Mercy/Hermanas de las Misericordia in 1894. Today our agency continues to address the emotional and physical needs of children and families in Brooklyn, Queens and across Long Island through innovative treatments and life-changing interventions. We provide community-based prevention and family foster care services, group homes in the community for struggling children and families within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and short-term residential services for unaccompanied migrant children. PROGRAM BACKGROUND:
The children in our START with Hope program are in the U.S. as children whose parents/guardians are not physically with them. Many of our children have fled dangerous and violent situations in their own home countries, including but not limited to Central and South America. Most of our children have suffered devastating losses through trauma, violence, abandonment, poverty, substance abuse, or abuse. The children’s safety, nutritional, medical, emotional health and education are our top priorities.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the START Nurse Supervisor, the LPN will be responsible for providing the best possible nursing care to minors placed in the care of MercyFirst by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Shifts assigned may vary and change according to Agency needs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) requires all candidates and employees to show proof of immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases transmitted by the respiratory route if working directly with children, including Varicella, MMK (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) DTaP or DTap, and Influenza.
Current Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State, current CPR certification and completion of required courses in Child Abuse and Infection Control. Must have and maintain a Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record. Minimum of 1 year of experience treating children/adolescents in the nursing field. Spanish-speaking preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct Physical Health Assessments for Infants, Children, Adolescents, including HIV Risk Assessments, Safety Assessments, General First Aid and Triage Activities
- Routine Screening for Substance Abuse, Developmental Health, Mental health, Physical Body Checks for Signs of Abuse
- Routine management and training regarding chronic conditions (Asthma, Diabetes)
- Training and Health Education related to Sexual Reproductive Health
- Medication Administration and Management Reconciliation
- Execute medical orders (tests, tasks, hospitalizations, etc.) as ordered by physician.
- Ensure required documentation for all case actions (medical notes) are completed within established timeframes.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients and staff.
- Maintain a safe and secure medical environment for clients.
- Take vital signs, heights, and weights, document observations and activities.
- Provide immunizations.
- Provide first aid and emergency care as needed.
- Obtain certain lab specimens.
- Administer hearing and vision tests.
- Accept medication deliveries, check for accuracy, store safely.
- Document observations and activities.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries.

SALARY: $30.00 - $32.00 per hour
Hiring bonus of $1,000 after 500 worked hours.
