Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Centers provide innovative, comprehensive and interdisciplinary care for women and their babies. As the only Maternal-Fetal specialists in the region associated with an academic medical center, our specialists bring their own expertise as well as collaboration with neonatologists, geneticists and other University of Minnesota Health specialists to deliver the highest level of care from preconception to post-partum.
You will be working at the following locations: University of Minnesota Medical Center (Minneapolis, MN), Fairview Southdale Hospital (Edina, MN), Fairview Ridges Hospital (Burnsville, MN) and St. John's Hospital (Maplewood, MN).
This position will be working 48 hours every two weeks on the day shift, 8 hour shifts and will be on-call, rotating among staff, to cover holidays and weekends.
Responsibilities Job DescriptionThe Perinatal Sonographer in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic is responsible for providing an advanced level of sonography services for the woman experiencing a high-risk pregnancy and her unborn baby. The Perinatal Sonographer works under the direction of a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist (physician) through the creation of diagnostic images appropriate to the Maternal/Fetal Diagnosis/Concern and the gestational age of the pregnancy. Treats all patients in an age and culturally sensitive manner. Responsible for meeting the established practice standards for patient care and Perinatal Imaging as defined by AIUM and by the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Standards of Care for this high-risk population. Responsible for supplies and equipment. Responsible for coordinating teamwork with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
- Performs examinations with technical accuracy and in a timely manner.
- Identifies anatomical orientation on all related images.
- Understands structure visualized and its significance.
- Uses internal/external resources to obtain and/or identify all required images.
- Identifies correct template when generating report.
- Provides care, education and support for patients during pregnancy terminations.
- Ensures proper identification on all images.
- Accurately completes computer functions – edits, status changes, and logging.
- Accurately ensures correct patient identification.
- Accurately identifies each patient and reason why she has been referred to Maternal-Fetal Medicine for services.
- Accurately follows standardized processes for archiving and completing report.
- Accurately uses Tricefy software to send images to patient.
- Maintains patient care.
- Conducts examinations while following established patient care and safety procedures.
- Positions patients as required achieving quality diagnostic images according to department protocol.
- Documents initial and ongoing data, interventions, responses/results.
- Performs interventions consistent with established policies/procedures/guidelines.
- Prepares and plans ahead to coordinate exams and organizes patient care to ensure quality and continuity of patient care.
- Provides ultrasound exam keeping in mind that patients/families are potentially anxious, concerned and frightened due to the identification of a potential pregnancy complication.
- Considers the comfort of the pregnant woman and positions for patient comfort and fetal well-being.
- May need to transport patient to exam room or perform portable ultrasound exams at patient’s bedside.
- May need to move ultrasound machine from hospital to clinic as needed for patient scheduling.
- Maintains equipment.
- Correctly operates and optimizes use of equipment.
- Documents equipment concerns and/or malfunctions.
- Initiates a service call when appropriate to ensure efficient department operation.
- Accurately accesses system administrator for Perinatal PACS system with issues/questions in a timely manner to ensure archival of images.
QualificationsRequired
- Vocational/Technical Training in Ultrasonography or Associate Degree
- Registered or registry eligible by ARDMS (with goal of achieving OB/GYN within 1 year of hire)
- BLS certification
Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree in Radiation Science or in Imaging
- Experience working in a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center
- Nuchal Translucency, Fetal Echo, or CLEAR certification
