Job Description:
The Student Health Care Center (SHCC) at The University of Florida within the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine (CHFM) is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) positions entail operating within the healthcare team under the supervision of registered nurses (RN), ensuring seamless patient flow, and maintaining high standards of care across all aspects of the healthcare process within the SHCC clinics. Key responsibilities include adhering to nursing license standards while delivering patient care within clinic settings, administering treatments, conducting procedures, dispensing medications, and providing patient education and counseling. LPNs are also tasked with collecting and documenting vital signs, conducting visual acuity tests, and performing Point-of-Care testing as directed by healthcare providers.
Nursing Responsibilities and Clinical Duties in the SHCC clinics:
- Facilitates patient flow in a timely, efficient, and customer-friendly manner.
- Provides appropriate nursing care and treatment, including starting IVs if certified, performing wound care and dressings, and administering medications.
- Documents nursing interventions and patient responses in the patient’s medical record.
- Performs procedure independently as indicated and/or requested by medical providers.
- Works collaboratively with team nurses and medical assistants to oversee the clinic.
- Orients and trains new team members.
- Triage patients by telephone and in person, ensuring that their health problem is appropriately managed promptly.
- Reviews EPIC messages for the management of medical advice and prescription refills.
- Provides care using SHCC RN Standing Orders and Practice Protocols.
- Meets with new and current nurses as needed to train and onboard nurses to function at a high level in Epic and SHCC Standards of Performance.
- Provides professional nursing coverage to other SHCC clinics as assigned.
Education and Counseling:
- Educates and counsels patients on their illness, injury, or chronic condition.
- Promotes health and wellness through assessment strategies and ongoing education/counseling.
- Documents interventions in patient’s health record.
- Coordinates care of specialized patient populations: transgender, eating disorders, obesity, anxiety, and depression as needed.
Supply Management:
- Coordinates and maintains adequate inventory levels of medications and medical supplies and ensures that medical equipment works properly.
The Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM, 40 hours per week. Hours and days may vary due to the needs of the SHCC Clinic. Overtime may be required based on workload requirements. Provides professional nursing weekend coverage at least one Sunday per month or as needed. Floats to all clinical teams as required for training and standardization.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes.
- Current CPR certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years’ experience is preferred, however, an appropriate amount of experience or appropriate college coursework may be substituted at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
- Knowledge of providing patient care using sound nursing practice.
- Knowledge of pathophysiology.
- Knowledge of electronic medical record (EMR).
- Knowledge of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Skilled in administering intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections.
- Skilled in administering oxygen.
- Skilled in starting, monitoring, and administering intravenous (IV) fluids and medications, if certified.
- Skilled in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Skilled in performing wound care and Point-of-Care Testing.
- Ability to communicate efficiently in writing and verbally with patients, family members, and staff.
- Ability to take pertinent histories and document them in appropriate health records.
- Ability to administer medications.
- Ability to provide treatments to patients using guidelines, policies, Practice Protocols, and Standing Orders.
- Ability to adhere to UF and UF Health policy.
