Provide experimental support for various projects to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of HIV replication, naturally-evolved antiviral cellular defense mechanisms, and new anti-HIV drugs in the Pornillos Laboratory at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Utah. Techniques and methods include microbiology, cell biology, molecular virology, and biochemistry. Experiments are expected to be performed under minimal supervision, by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. Training will be provided as necessary.
Responsibilities
Laboratory responsibilities: Primary experimental responsibilities will include:
- Cloning, plasmid vector construction and production.
- Propagation of bacterial, insect cell, or mammalian cell cultures for large-scale recombinant protein and RNA expression.
- Protein and RNA purification.
- Biochemical characterization of protein and RNA reagents and complexes.
Shared responsibilities include general laboratory support (housekeeping, maintenance of supplies and equipment, laboratory waste management, etc.). Additional responsibilities related to specific projects may be assigned by the PI, as needed.
Communication: As this is a teamwork-oriented position, responsibilities include keeping consistent and open communication with other laboratory personnel, providing regular and detailed updates (during group meetings or as needed) on the status and progress of experiments, and maintaining an up-to-date and detailed laboratory notebook.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Preferences
Applicants with demonstrated proficiency and/or laboratory experience in large-scale and high-throughput methods in biomedical laboratory settings will be preferred. Please highlight any previous experience with working in sterile laboratory settings, high-precision measurements, and high-throughput assays.
