Job Description:
The Administrative Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and facilitating patient care functions within the hospital. The individual in this role demonstrates advanced knowledge to manage the patient care operations in the absence of the Vice Presidents, Directors, and Department Managers. This leadership role includes responsibility for establishing meaningful communication systems, assuring effective resources management, and coordinating patient placement and care processes across multiple departments.
Principle Responsibilities:
- Serves as the representative of hospital administration and management in their absence.
- Maintains an environment to meet patient and family needs for safety, comfort, education and support.
- Refers situations to Patient Representative, Risk Management, Employee Health, Nursing Leaders as appropriate.
- Works with unit charge nurse and physicians to place patient admissions and transfers.
- Informs on-call Administrator / Department Manager of resolved and/or pending problems and actions taken.
- Gives direction to other hospital departments in the absence of their manager to assure the delivery of patient care.
- Enforces high standards for the quality of patient care delivered on patient care units. Incorporate patient, staff and physician needs and concerns into decision making and action.
- Serves as resource and coach to hospital employees.
- Provides interpretation and information regarding policies and procedures, including personnel processes.
- Directs staff to potential resources/equipment sources within hospital or community.
- Intercedes with employees on situational issues, taking action per hospital policy.
- Serves as a resource and mentor for charge nurses on off shifts and weekends.
- Identifies issues which impact patient care throughout the hospital.
- Participates in resolving system issues, taking immediate action when appropriate and/or triaging to operational managers.
- Analyzes problems in a systematic, logical and timely manner.
- Responds to physician and staff concerns and relates information to operational staff.
- Manages situations in a manner consistent with hospital policies and nursing practice standards.
- Responds to emergency calls, including emergency codes and acts as resource to team members.
- Manages media and external communications according to established policy.
- Responds to concerns of patients and family members in absence of Patient Representative using positive service recovery skills. Role models customer services focus with patients, families and physicians.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients, public, and staff.
- Allocates daily staffing resources.
- Determines staffing resource needs in collaboration with unit charge nurses, considering staffing numbers, skill mix and competency requirements.
- Provides direction to Staffing Office personnel in allocating resources.
- Assess staffing needs on an ongoing basis and make adjustments as needed for flexing staffing to patient care needs.
- Facilitates patient placement.
- Use established placement guidelines for primary and secondary unit or most appropriate placement based on patient needs.
- Integrates staffing and bed availability information in making placement decisions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate's or Vocational degree in Nursing
- 2+ years in an acute care setting with 1 year as charge nurse or similar role
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing
- 2+ years of management/leadership skills
Licenses/Certifications:
- Licensed Registered Nurse - MN Board of Nursing required if working in state of MN upon hire/WI Department of Safety & Professional Services required if working in the state of WI upon hire
- BLS Tier 1 - Basic Life Support - Multisource required by end of orientation for the metro hospitals OR must be enrolled in the first available course
- Location Specific Licensed & Certification Requirements:
ACLS Tier 2 - Advanced Cardiac Life Support is required by end of orientation for Owatonna, Faribault, United - Regina Campus, River Falls
ACLS Tier 3 is required by end of orientation for Coon Rapids Medical Center
PALS - is required within the first three months at Owatonna, Faribault, United - Regina Campus, River Falls
NRP/TNCC completed within the first year of employment at Owatonna, Faribault, United - Regina Campus, River Falls
