Postdoctoral Research Associate, Schultz Lab
About the Opportunity
The Marine and Environmental Sciences department at Northeastern University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work with regional land-to-ocean modeling, salt marsh biogeochemistry, and Nature-based solutions to climate change.
Ecosystem services provided by salt marshes are numerous and include coastal storm protection, carbon sequestration, and serving as a habitat for several species. Our understanding of carbon cycling in these ecosystems, however, is limited. Aquatic pathways transporting carbon from salt marshes to the ocean are poorly understood. While transport of inorganic carbon could lead to coastal acidification, alkalinity transport to the ocean could constitute an underrated sink of atmospheric carbon.
The Schultz Lab is looking for a motivated researcher to help include biogeochemistry to salt marsh dynamics models with the goal of evaluating aquatic pathways transporting carbon from salt marshes to the coast.
Key Responsibilities
- Designing, running, and analyzing model experiments
- Developing code to add sediment-water equations to the biogeochemical module
- Mentoring and instructing undergraduate and graduate students
- Collaborating with team members on data synthesis to be used for model evaluation
- Presenting the work at conferences and preparing manuscripts for publication
Qualifications
A Ph.D. is required in either oceanography, biogeochemistry, Earth system sciences, or an associated field. Candidates with computational expertise, especially using Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) or interest in model development, are especially encouraged to apply.
Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year subject to satisfactory performance.
Application Materials
Application should include a CV with a list of publications, a statement of research interests (2 pages maximum), and a cover letter. Any questions should be sent to c.schultz@northeastern.edu.
