The Department of Pediatrics South Main Clinic ( SMC ) has an immediate opening for a Registered Nurse (RN) that shares our vision and passion for caring for women, children and adults. The RN plays a critical role on the care team, facilitating the efficient delivery of patient care while supporting the professional and academic mission of the continuity clinic for pediatric residency.
The South Main Clinic cares for a disproportionate number of the county’s underserved children. Over 60% of the children served are from families who only speak Spanish and 25% are uninsured. With over 10,500 pediatric patient visits per year, providers are challenged to provide culturally-aware primary care to a high volume practice that maximizes the use of the WIC program, a county immunization clinic, Medicaid eligibility workers, a pharmacy voucher program for uninsured children and a Reach Out and Read literacy program. We also provide care for a large number of medically complex children in a collaborative medical home model.
This position is responsible for delivering professional nursing care to patients by utilizing strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status; implement clinical nursing interventions and evaluate patient care plans to enhance and improve outcomes and ensure a safe and comprehensive care environment.
The incumbent must possess fluent Spanish language skills.

Essential Functions
- Identifies and assesses problems through patient assessment and interactions; and evaluates actual or potential patient health problems.
- Assesses, plans and implements interventions for solving patient care problems.
- Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in patient’s record.
- Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies plan of care as needed to achieve health care goals.
- Develops and participates in educating patients, their families, or significant others about care programs.
- Initiates patient care meetings with the health care team to revise the plan of care as the patient’s condition warrants.
- Maintains a safe and comprehensive patient care environment.
- Provides guidance and direction to members of the health care team to ensure quality patient care.
- Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
- Provides and oversees direct patient care in accordance with established nursing protocol and physician’s orders.
- Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precaution; and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.
- Participates in total quality management to positively effects patient and system outcomes to improve care.
- Supervise and mentor Medical Assistants assigned to work in clinic.
- Assist in the education of physicians, medical students and other students.
- Coordinate care of the medically complex child.
Problem Solving The scope of the Clinical Nurse’s authority is to make nursing practice decisions in his/her area of specialty as is broadly defined by University of Utah Hospital, Nursing Practice Department, unit-specific policies and standards, and as outlined in the Nurse Practice Act.
Major challenges encountered by the incumbent include problems related to patients and/or patient’s families; determining the appropriate nursing action in crisis/emergency situations; assessing and prioritizing patient’s needs.
Comments
Incumbents must have the ability to function during regularly scheduled clinic hours; demonstrate both mental and emotional stamina in situations dealing with multiple patients and family members, etc.; function calmly and competently in high stress situations; and the ability to deal with the hazards involved in assessing and providing care to patients. Incumbents face exposure to potentially dangerous infections contaminants as part of the daily hazards of the job.
The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served at the clinic. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.
Minimum Qualifications
Required
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.
Preferred
Some positions may require additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support ( ACLS ), Pediatric Advanced Life Support ( PALS ), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program ( NRP ) within one year of hire.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
