Education, Health and General Assignment Reporter
Job Description
Posted Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 4:00 AM
The Cape Cod Times, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a digitally savvy journalist to be our next education, health and general assignment reporter, identifying, verifying and curating news of what readers on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are talking about.
Our readers live on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, or have second homes here, or visit often during the summer or have family or vacation memories from this area. The readership is throughout New England and beyond.
Education is one of the nation’s most high-profile areas of concern. On Cape Cod, the education reporter will have the chance to mine stories from many sources: public and private schools, community college, maritime university, English as second language school, trade schools, internships at leading ocean and marine science laboratories, GRE training, driving schools, older adults returning to college and more.
Nearly every beat covered at the Cape Cod Times has an education component. We are looking for a reporter who will break news and balance daily reporting alongside longer-term reporting based on data analysis, public records and interviews. The education reporter could be asked to cover general assignment stories as well.
We are a digital-first news organization. We want someone who wants to try new ways of reaching an audience, such as through YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and more. An understanding of audience metrics is helpful.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least three years of professional journalism experience.
- High-level writing, communication and time management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline.
- Ability to produce content that is engaging, clean, accurate and publication ready.
- Comfort with using social media to enhance reporting and promote stories.
- Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- The position is required to live on Cape Cod or very close to the Cape.
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
- Your resume – one to two pages.
- A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
- Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
