GENERAL DUTIESHistology Procedures:
- Coordinates daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule.
- Prepares routine and non-routine slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologists.
- Processes specimens delivered from various departments when delivered to the laboratory. Sorts specimens according to priority and difficulty of procedures and embeds specimens into blocks and fixes tissue in formalin. Embeds and performs microtomy of embedded tissues.
- Ensures appropriate accessioning, labeling and processing of all tissue samples.
- Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections, and staining of slides.
- Prepares solutions, stains (routine, special or IHC), and reagents in accordance with standard written procedures.
- Assists the pathologist in gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen/cryostat section procedures.
- Operates and maintains all histology area lab equipment in proper state of readiness and cleanliness.
- Maintains documentation of all specimen and instrumentation quality control.
- Processes and ships specimens to referral laboratories.
Autopsy Support and Morgue Maintenance:
- Obtains the required documents and accessioning, labeling and processing of all tissue samples.
- Sets-up all equipment and gathers supplies needed for the specimen collection and procedure.
- Assists with dissection and obtaining the weight and measurements of the patient and specimen collected.
- Performs tasks such as sewing the body and organs post procedure, cleaning the patient and patient movement and transport. Releases the patient to the funeral home/coroner’s office.
Material Management:
- Participates in the maintenance of adequate inventory of supplies and reagents.
Safety:
- Complies with hospital/laboratory safety and infection control additional policies and procedures, which contribute to the efficiency, safety, and integrity of the department. Reports safety incidents to the supervisor.
- Follows Standard Precautions at all times when dealing with blood and body fluids.
- Collaborates with others to ensure workflows and operational targets meet the needs of internal and external clients. Ensures patient and employee safety, quality control and accreditation requirements are met.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Registered Histologist Technician (ASCP)
American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to independently perform a wide range of routine histology laboratory procedures including interpretation of quality control data.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Must have skill to use personal computers and lab IS software applications.
- Must be a team player.
- Professional interaction with pathologists.
- Knowledge of acceptable Histology laboratory testing theory and techniques, normal and abnormal laboratory testing results, knowledge of regulatory standards as set forth by CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, CMS, OSHA, and CLSI.
- Instrumental maintenance knowledge, knowledge of handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
