Clinical Research Intern
Overview: The Clinical Research Intern at the Durham VA Anesthesiology Service is involved with the implementation and execution of a variety of research projects, including subject screening and enrollment for program evaluation projects and studies, specimen collection and processing, data collection and record administration. The position involves a significant amount of flexibility and an ability to manage complex projects.
This position is ideal for a highly motivated individual who thrives in an environment allowing a high degree of independence and responsibility. In this position, you would be working with a group of dynamic and highly productive investigators engaged in a wide variety of research and quality improvement/program evaluation projects related to prehabilitation and health care around surgery.
Location: This position is located in Durham, North Carolina and candidates must be willing to relocate prior to start date. This position is primarily in-person.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Administer questionnaires and other assessments to veterans participating in studies or projects, as needed.
- Review electronic & paper medical records for medical data and enter into electronic database.
- Assist in the collection and management of clinical data and source documents for support of analytical and/or research projects.
- Work in compliance with study protocols to screen, recruit and consent research participants for various clinical trials.
- Coordinate and administer the logistical aspects of clinical trials, including collection of clinical data from electronic patient records and clinical specimens according to study protocols.
- Troubleshoot and modify protocol implementation as necessary and appropriate.
- Assist in arranging research meetings and other communications either in-person or via other electronic means within the VA system and with non-VA collaborators.
- Work effectively with VA populations.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Adhere to safety and compliance regulations.
Qualification/Experience:
- Applicants must have or must be enrolled in an accredited program towards a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Basic computer skills are required, with experience using MS Access and MS Excel preferred.
- Requires an organized, task-oriented, deadline-sensitive individual able to work independently and proactively plan projects and schedule.
- Must deal diplomatically and professionally with a variety of investigators, clinical and lab personnel, subjects, and administrative staff.
- Demonstrated leadership, professional initiative, and teamwork abilities are required.
- Prior experience with clinical research, regulatory documentation, basic lab processing skills, and subject screening and consenting are not mandatory.
- They must be detail-oriented, organized, and reliable with good communication skills.
Physical Requirements: The physical requirements and activities that are required to perform the essential functions of the position include, but may not be limited to, as follows: Must be able to occasionally lift, pull and push a minimum of 25 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, squat, kneel, and stoop, regularly use fingers and hands for computer work.
Supervisory Controls: The position of the Clinical Research Intern is under the direct supervision of the PIs in the team.

Hourly Rate: $17.31 per hour non-negotiable
- 4 hours/week, some weekend/night hours anticipated
Status: Non-Exempt
Start Date: Expected start date will be 4-6 weeks after the offer but is somewhat flexible and contingent upon completion and approval of VA paperwork.
