As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Order and the Health Sector Order), all employees working for Providence Health Care must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
What You Will Do
Reporting to the Orthoptist Supervisor, and under the clinical direction of a Physician, performs various specialized eye tests, provides the referring Physician with test results, analyzes test results and provides diagnosis and therapy, and makes therapy recommendations. Assists Ophthalmologist with special duties such as surgical procedures. Ensures the department is well equipped and machinery is in good working order to function efficiently.
What You Bring
Education:
- Successful graduation from an approved program in Orthoptics from an accredited training school, current Cardiac Life Support course, and completion of the Ophthalmic Assistant course plus one year's recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Canadian Orthoptic Council (COC) Certified.
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to organize work.

Your Day to Day:
- Evaluate patients by gathering information required for diagnosis and treatment.
- Monitor patient progress and alerts Physician to unexpected changes.
- Provide treatment based on test results such as exercises, patching therapy, and prism therapy.
- Prepare reports on tests performed as required.
- Use a computerized patient booking system for appointments and processes medical billing.
- Take photographs of patients' eyes as per Physician request, labels them, and prepares collages for interpretation.
- Maintain departmental ward stock supply and daily inventory of Physician examining room.
- Maintain equipment, performs minor repairs, and reports malfunctions.
- Participate in research projects by adjusting testing procedures.
- Explain procedures to patients, assists with injections and minor surgical procedures, and administers drugs per Physician orders.
- Provide orientation and teach ophthalmic and orthoptic test procedures.
