Job Summary and Qualifications
Summary:
The Diabetes Educator is responsible for teaching and coordinating Patient Education, assessing the needs of the patient in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and providing appropriate education for disease-specific care on the necessary lifestyle changes involved in a diabetes diagnosis, including nutrition, medication, physical activity and glucose testing. This position will provide care for patients and communicate with families, medical staff, nursing staff and other health care professionals to assure patient care needs are met.
Requirements:
A. Licensure/Certification: Must be a Certified Diabetic Educator (CDE), or must have current licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Utah or Registered Nurse compact license from participating compact states or must be a licensed dietitian. Maintain appropriate continuing education (CE) credits within a 5-year period as specified by the commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
B. Education: A B.S., B.A. or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
C. Experience: Prefer a minimum of 2-4 years’ experience in diabetes education, outpatient counseling and/or an acute care facility. Experience with insulin pumps and CGM.
D. Special Qualifications: The Diabetes Educator is required to have comprehensive knowledge and skills in diabetes care in a variety of disease states.
