Job Description
Performs tests with high complexity on blood and body fluids to provide information for diagnosing and combating disease consistent with a level 1 trauma center. Works independently with moderate supervision from a Medical Laboratory Scientist Supervisor or the Director of Laboratory Operations. Provides mentoring, orientation and guidance to Registered Medical Laboratory Scientists. May be assigned to work in a specialized section within the department.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory/medical technology science and ASCP (or equivalent) certification in two or more general areas of the laboratory. Or, Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory/medical technology science and completion of an AMA approved laboratory training program and eligible for ASCP certification. Or, completion of an approved government training program and eligible for ASCP certification. ASCP certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.
- Possesses and maintains full competencies in 2 or more department areas in lab operations, i.e. chemistry, microbiology, hematology, blood bank or sub-specialties. At least one competency must be completed within 90 days of assignment to the position.
- Verbal communication skills required to interact with other hospital personnel.
- Writing skills and computer aptitude required to document test results and prepare reports of daily work.
- Must be able to stand for long periods.
- Ability to work in a fast paced, high volume environment.
- Must be available to rotate shifts and work weekends and holidays.
- All Scientists must meet the CLIA ’88 requirements for the complexity level of work performed.
