In this role, you will:
- Manage day-to-day laboratory operations for the histology department and establish guidelines to prioritize work production, evaluate effectiveness and improve the quality of services provided.
- Oversee and mentor histotechnologists, histology technicians, and support staff.
- Coordinate activities of personnel engaged in collecting, testing and analyzing specimens in order to provide diagnostics information to pathologist.
- Actively integrate the Pathology functions including but not limited to specimen management, gross sectioning, histology, and accessioning. Develop, implement, and monitor protocols for tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
- Develop standard operating procedures and policies to improve operating efficiency and effectiveness of medical services.
- Be accountable for the performance of quality control, maintenance procedures, turnaround times and quality assurance activities to maintain effective operation of test systems.
- Develop and ensure the implementation and monitoring of quality process improvements.
- Ensure high standards of quality control and quality assurance in all laboratory procedures.
- Provide guidance and assistance to staff on procedures, troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Ensure training of new staff and retraining as needed as well as ensure staff competency for designated test systems.
- Be accountable for educating and enforcing the policies relating to the appropriate handling, testing, resulting, investigation, corrective action and records for proficiency testing (PT) required by accrediting agencies.
- Be accountable for human resource and payroll functions including staffing plans, performance evaluations, coaching/counseling, and payroll timekeeping.
- Ensure policies and procedures are followed by staff.
- Provide input to the director for the necessary financial operations budgeting, evaluating, monitoring, and implementing corrective action.
- Utilizes labor management tools effectively.
- Review processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
- Maintain the quality assurance program, document annual competency assessments for technical staff, review testing results to ensure quality of laboratory test results, and evaluate lab quality control reports.
- Actively participate in the financial management of the site or department. Routinely evaluate and monitor laboratory expenses by practice and department and implement appropriate actions based on variance to trends and budgets.
- Be responsible for recruitment, hiring, training, orientation, discipline and evaluation of technical associates.
- Assure proper maintenance of laboratory and office equipment and approve ordering supplies and services.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including those set by OSHA, CLIA, CAP, and other relevant agencies.
- Prepare and maintain documentation for inspections and audits.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Associate degree in the field of Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing.
OR
- Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
- State licensure, if applicable.
- Certified or eligible for Board of Certification (BOC) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
Experience:
- Strong scientific knowledge of Histology required.
- HT or HTL (ASCP) certification preferred.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in process improvement workflow design preferred.
- Demonstrated ability in analyzing and troubleshooting complex Histology processes.
- Supervisory experience in a high volume anatomic pathology laboratory.
- Exceptional communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, under time constraints, without close supervision.
- Minimum of 8 years of histology laboratory experience with at least 3-5 years of supervisor/management experience.
