The Department of Pathology seeks to hire an on-call Pathologists’ Assistant. Our team of 11 pathologists and 3 pathologists’ assistants serve the University of New Mexico Hospital and associated clinics, an affiliated hospital (Sandoval Regional Medical Center/SRMC), and an affiliated outpatient surgical center (Outpatient Surgery and Imaging Services/OSIS). The Pathologists’ Assistant will work primarily at the 500 bed University Hospital associated with the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center with an annual volume of approximately 21,000 specimens, on an intermittent basis.
The workload varies from simple to complex specimens, intraoperative consults, gross photography, triaging tissue for research and tumor banking, and special studies.
This position is needed on an on-call basis, for full-day (or occasionally full week) coverage at UNM Hospital, and at SRMC for occasional frozen section coverage.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program or in a medical or scientific field; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
- Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program; or Bachelor's degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program and 3 years of directly-related experience; or a Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of directly-related experience.
- Must be ASCP-PA certified or eligible for certification within 1 year of employment.
- Demonstrated expertise and/or training as a Pathologists’ Assistant.
- Previous experience cutting frozen sections.
- Previous experience triaging tissue for research, tumor banking and/or special studies.
- Previous experience training or supervising gross room support staff.
- Submit transcripts with required degree documented: Master's degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program; or Bachelor's degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program.
- Submit copy of ASCP certification or eligibility for certification within 1 year of employment.
- Able to provide guidance to junior pathology residents in the gross room.
- Provide at least 3 professional references including supervisory.
