Job Description:
The Veterinary Associate Clinical Specialist Operating Room attends to both large and small animal surgical suites. The Operating Room Technician needs to have a familiarity with aseptic technique as well as a general knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures. The lead worker delegates and helps to determine needs for the unit on a daily or future planned events. Assisting the OR supervisor or acting as able in their absence.
Job Responsibilities:
- 60% - Performs/teaches prep of operative site. Performs circulating nurse duties during small/large animal procedures, completes the surgical checklist/call-out. Assists students and surgical team. Instructs technician interns. Teaches operation and troubleshooting of non-sterile surgical equipment (including but not limited to electrosurgical units, scope equipment, etc.). Performs scrub nurse duties, as needed, during small/large animal surgeries. Observes and ensures aseptic techniques & protocols are followed. Takes appropriate measures if technique is broken, ensuring sterile technique is maintained. Cleans and disinfects operating rooms after surgeries and on a routine basis.
- 10% - Maintains and enters charges for surgical procedures and supplies per patient into computer. Interacts with surgical team and Hospital Supply staff to ensure necessary supplies are available for daily surgical schedule. Maintains log of procedures utilizing operating rooms and/or personnel.
- 10% - Works closely with surgeons to determine additional supplies and instruments needed and availability and condition of current instruments (i.e., instruments/equipment in need of repair, new instruments to be ordered, etc.). Ensures that instruments are repaired or replaced as needed. Performs inventory and manages stock.
- 10% - Attends department meetings to discuss updates. Assists in student and faculty orientation to operating room protocol. Prepares surgical packs and supplies for sterilization. Assists supervisor with training live-in students on Operating Room procedures and protocols. Works with live-in students to ensure that after-hours surgical procedures are done with appropriate equipment and instrumentation. Other job duties as assigned.
- 10% - Provides supervisor with input for the evaluation of level 1-3 technicians. Manages daily schedule flow in Surgery Suite (including but not limited to case assignments, lunch breaks, etc.) along with supervisor. Communicates staffing availability/limitations to ancillary services schedule coordinator along with supervisor. Coordinates daily equipment and sterilization needs with Central Supply staff along with supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience OR Associate Degree in Vet Technology with 4 years of experience; OR CVT or Equivalent with 4 years of experience OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.
Specific Experience - Administrative experience related to the duties of the job.

Required to be capable of lifting 50+ pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, crawling, twisting, pushing/pulling, climbing, and squatting.
