Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs the receptionist and secretarial duties on the unit assigned and meets the communication needs of the patient (family, departmental staff and medical staff). Supports the nursing staff by performing specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient. Assist and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Maintains patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and respects patient’s rights.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Performs purposeful hourly rounding including: Pain, Position, Personal needs, and Possessions
- Promptly answers telephone/call lights in a polite manner and relaying pertinent information to the appropriate staff
- Assists nursing staff with patient care by making patient beds, giving baths, passing waters, feeding patients, providing oral care, accurate Intake & Output, assisting with mobilization/ambulation, daily weights, performing bedside glucose testing and obtaining vital signs and any other duties assigned by the RN
- Greets patient/family upon arrival to the nursing unit and assists in the transportation of patients to and from other units and test areas
- Ensures all rooms and work areas are clean and tidy (e.g. patient rooms, clean utility, and soiled utility), IV poles, suction machines, commodes, and other equipment are cleaned and properly stored
- Has working knowledge of our electronic health record system and computer
- Upon discharge of patient, prepares room for new patient including removal of patient care equipment and supplies as appropriate (e.g. IV poles, commodes, urinals, and suction canisters)
- Accurately transcribes and processes physician orders
- Orders and maintains supplies and forms
- Maintains census board of admissions, discharges and transfers to and from unit and completes assigned logs
- Maintains appropriate documentation, update charts accurately and timely, anticipates admits and discharges ensuring proper paperwork is in place
- Monitors cardiac monitors and reports any alarms to the appropriate nursing staff or Charge Nurse
- Processes orders in computer system before noting as completed
- Requisitions tests as ordered, completes necessary forms and notifies consultations timely
- Assists in directing patients/families as needed; treats all with respect
- Interacts professionally with patient/families and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary
- Demonstrates ability to utilize the electronic record
- Demonstrates ability to assist with patient positioning, picking up and delivering items to other departments, and assists in setting up and taking down of traction
- Demonstrates organizational ability through effective use of time and equipment
- Demonstrates role reflective of unit and organizational goals; communicates with patients, visitors, co-workers, physicians and other health care members
- Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities
- Maintains unit logs as required
- Maintains an orderly unit environment with sufficient supplies and equipment in order to facilitate staff performance of patient care
- Performs all other department related duties as assigned by the RN
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of a Nurse Aide training program, or 6 months experience as a Nursing Assistant in a Healthcare facility, or completion of fundamentals if enrolled in an Accredited School of Nursing program
- BLS Certification
- Knowledge of keyboard/computer
- Medical terminology knowledge
Preferred:
- Successful completion of a Nurse Aide training program, or 6 months experience as a Nursing Assistant in a Healthcare facility, or completion of fundamentals if enrolled in an Accredited School of Nursing program
- Current State of Michigan CAN certification
- Previous work experience or training as a Unit Clerk and Nurse Aide
