Transformational Computing Physicists apply fundamental theoretical physics and chemistry-based scientific theory to the field of engineering to provide solutions for difficult technical challenges. They demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the role of the design of experiments, and the requirements for creating statistically relevant results. Transformational Computing Physicists possess a thorough understanding of fundamentals of device physics and material science, including topics such as superconducting and low-temperature physical phenomena; semiconductor physics and devices; quantum mechanics. They also possess a basic understanding of fundamentals and best practices in digital design, RF engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering.
Job responsibilities include modeling and simulation of novel devices; developing and leading experiments; cryogenic test and measurement of advanced circuits; developing procedures, methods, and tools for test; providing direction to test engineers and technicians; analyzing experimental data and provide recommendations and feedback; and publishing novel results. Transformational Computing Physicists may also lead multi-disciplinary teams in the execution of program tasking, and then report results to internal and external customers.
We are looking for you to join our team as a Principal Experimental Physicist or Sr. Principal Experimental Physicist based out of McClellan, CA in the Sacramento area.
We are seeking a motivated Physicist to help us design the next generation of high-performance computing solutions! Our technology is built around superconducting electronics and energy efficient computation. You will work with a team of scientists and engineers to design, fabricate, and test digital logic circuits. We are a hard-working team that strives to foster a culture of belonging, mentorship, and personal growth. We are passionate about creating innovative solutions to exciting multi-disciplinary challenges!
As a member of our team you will:
- Work closely with design and fabrication to build and test novel quantum circuits and interfaces with CMOS
- Test custom quantum circuits and integrated CMOS interface circuits
- Implement best practices for test results and concurrent simulations to iterate within the design process
This position can be filled as either a Principal Experimental Physicist or a Sr. Principal Experimental Physicist.
Basic Qualifications for Principal Experimental Physicist:
- PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, or a related field; OR Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience; OR a Bachelor's Degree with 5 plus years of relevant experience.
- Experience designing and executing experiments in physics or electronic device research.
- Experience with instrument control over TCP IP or GPIB.
- Experience working in a lab environment.
- The ability to demonstrate strong communication skills and to work on a diverse multi-disciplinary team.
- A strong ability to learn new topics quickly and independently solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite).

- PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, or a related field and 4 plus years' experience; Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant experience; Bachelor's Degree and 9 plus years' experience.

- Experience with instrument control over TCP IP or GPIB.
- Experience working in a lab environment.
- The ability to demonstrate strong communication skills and to work on a diverse multi-disciplinary team.
- A strong ability to learn new topics quickly and independently solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite).
Preferred qualifications:
- A PhD in Experimental Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Deep expertise of cryogenic experimental methods.
- Experience with superconducting electronics or digital circuits.
- Experience with cryogenic test systems.
- Ability to automate experimental tasks using high level and built-in software languages.
- Experience with integrating theory, design, and testing methodology to improve the product development cycle within an agile framework.
- An active TS/SCI clearance with a Polygraph.

Salary Range: $129,800 - $194,800
Salary Range 2: $161,000 - $241,400
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
