University of Minnesota Physicians (M Physicians) is a non-profit organization seeking driven individuals in both clinical and non-clinical areas to help transform health and medicine. Headquartered in Minneapolis, our organization employs more than 1,200 physicians, 300 advanced practice providers, and 2,200 health professionals and staff throughout Minnesota and beyond.
Join us on a mission to advance medicine.
University of Minnesota Physicians is expanding our critical care advance practice provider team due to growth and is seeking a Certified Nurse Practitioner or a Certified Physician Assistant to join our Critical Care service at the University of Minnesota Medical Center-West Bank campus.
In This Role, You Will:
Provide inpatient care for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit and beyond as a critical response provider.
Join a group of over 20 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and over 80 physicians on the Critical Care team providing cutting-edge care to our critically ill patients throughout the M Health Fairview system. There is a strong multi-professional culture within all the critical care teams. Our APPs are respected as essential team members regardless of patient population or location.
Function as a provider with our West Bank critical care team. This team currently manages care on a 10-bed mixed medical-surgical ICU that frequently has a broad array of acuity. You will provide direct patient care, consult specialists, and coordinate care as appropriate in the ICU, as well as be the primary provider managing all emergent events on the West Bank. This is not a formal teaching service but functions very autonomously in collaboration with the attending physician.
Lead the adult West Bank Rapid Response team. As a critical response provider, you will provide urgent and emergent response and evaluation for treatment of adult patients including inpatients, acute/transitional rehabilitation patients, and inpatient psychiatric patients. You will be working autonomously with telephone collaboration from critical care attendings and primary teams who frequently are not on site. You will make rapid assessment and treatment decisions in accordance with American Heart Association, Neurocritical Care Society, and current standards of care. You will consult specialists as appropriate and determine and facilitate patients receiving appropriate levels of care. Refined communication skills are required, as well as precise written and verbal handoffs to subsequent healthcare teams.
- Bring patience, motivation, and determination to provide the best critical care possible no matter the environment. We believe strongly critical care is a skill not a location, and we often are called to serve patients wherever the patient may be.
- Respond to events, expedite assessments, and create a differential diagnosis and treatment plan quickly.
- Perform with outstanding collaboration abilities.
- Be willing to acquire privileges in relevant procedures.
- Work one out of three weekends.
- Work approximately 70% of your time on day shifts, either 10- or 12-hour shifts.
- Work approximately 30% of your time on 12-hour night shifts.
We're Looking for a PA or NP Who Is:
- A graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or formal Adult Nurse Practitioner training program.
- Licensed with prescriptive authority through the MN Board of Medical Practice (PAs) or MN APRN license with prescriptive authority through MN Board of Nursing (NP's).
- Certified or eligible for certification through ANCC, AANP, or NCCPA.
- Able to meet threshold criteria/qualifications for credentialing and privileges.
- Experienced in a critical care environment.

- Able to respond to sepsis alerts and treat per protocols.
- Focused on education, detail-oriented, and a creative problem-solver.
