Summary:
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities:
- Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
- Updating patient information and collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
- Demonstrates techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understands all of the physicians' orders and matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test order.
- Checks all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Packages specimens for transport and stores specimen samples according to required temperature.
- Accurately labels and follows different procedures as outlined by specific protocols deemed necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
- Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attends annual department trainings and answers telephone calls, reading laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed, as required in some states.
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 0-2 years of experience.
