About Us: UofL Physicians is one of the largest, multi-specialty physician practices in the Kentuckiana region. With over 700 providers, 200 practice locations, and 78 specialties, UofL Physicians’ academic and community physicians care for all ages and stages of life, from pediatrics to geriatrics with compassion and expertise.
JOB SUMMARY
The team member performs highly technical and specialized functions for the Central Business Office. The primary function is to perform ICD-9-CM (soon to be ICD-10), CPT, and HCPCS coding for reimbursement, ensuring compliance with established coding guidelines and reimbursement policies.
Responsibilities
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:
- Coding (60% Weight)
- Obtain necessary records for review.
- Communicate deficiencies impacting billing.
- Review documentation for compliant coding and billing.
- Abstract patient evaluation and management services for appropriate coding.
- Follow established production and quality standards.
- Compliance (20% Weight)
- Ensure documentation meets Teaching Physician Rules and ULP policies.
- Ensure compliance with payer-specific rules for Advanced Practice Providers.
- Communication/Education (10% Weight)
- Develop communication with providers.
- Provide feedback on coding reviews.
- Respond to provider inquiries in a timely manner.
- Maintain compliance with coding regulations.
- Review incoming Fee Tickets for compliance.
- Work within a team environment to meet goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Coders will be audited quarterly by ULP Compliance/Audit Services Department.
Trial Period (internal applicants only):
Current Employees must complete a trial period of 10 business days to maintain participation in this program.
Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High School education or GED required.
- Must have and maintain Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification through AAPC or CCA, CCS, or CCS-P certification through AHIMA.
- Three years of direct coding experience preferred.
SELECTION/ELIGIBILITY
- Current CBO employees must apply to be considered.
- Positions will be selected based on: Metrics, Attendance, Disciplinary action.
- Criteria for remote positions include: 90 days of consistent achievement of metric standards, no attendance or disciplinary actions in the previous 6 months, ability to work independently.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Ongoing knowledge of coding guidelines.
- Advance knowledge of medical terminology and coding conventions.
- Skill in correlating symptoms to diagnoses for accurate coding.
- Strict compliance with coding guidelines.
- Attention to detail in coding and EMR entries.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Sedentary Work: Lifting 10lbs maximum.
- Frequent talking, hearing, and seeing required.
- Concentration on multiple tasks simultaneously.
