An EPDH in a community outreach position working with a Medicaid population is a primary care provider. They are able to work independently in multiple community locations, using a high level of decision-making skills to complete all hygiene services, intra-oral photos, x-rays, assessments, and preventive treatments. Using state-of-the-art tele-health technology to communicate and collaborate with the dentist, the tele-dentist will complete a chart review of the visit, diagnosis, and treatment plan for any restorative needs. The patient would be scheduled for restorative care with a local provider. The EPDH will also prescribe antibiotics when necessary, with guidance from a collaborative dentist to help stabilize a patient until they can be seen by a dentist. Many of our EPDHs are also trained to scoop and fill. An EPDH in this setting presents with a high level of accountability paired with organizational and communication skills.
Our hope with this position is that the hygienist (EPDH) would be very entrepreneurial, independent, and proactive, taking charge of their schedule and patient base to help keep access moving along. Allowing both the EPDH and the doctor to practice at the highest scope of their licensure.
