Description
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Responsible for performing all aspects of patient care in a laboratory environment that optimizes patient safety with minimal medical/health care errors. Verifies questionable results or samples and repeats procedures as necessary. Demonstrates ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory including blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, urinalysis, and phlebotomy. Performs routine phlebotomy services as needed.
The Medical Laboratory Technician complies with department and organization-wide policies, Critical Access Hospital requirements, Safety, and Infection Control, as well as Federal and State of Colorado regulations related to the performance of Keefe Memorial Hospital operations and requirements of the compliance program.
SIGNIFICANT DUTIES
- Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, and spinal fluid to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
- Analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.
- Enters data from analysis of medical tests and clinical results into computer for storage.
- Sets up, operates, calibrates, cleans, and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.
- Monitors quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
- Collects and studies blood samples to determine the number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes.
- Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
- Analyzes samples of biological material for chemical content.
- Identifies patient and labels all specimens with correct information.
- Performs high-complexity testing.
- Responds appropriately to results with the status of STAT, call results, patient waiting, or timed specimens.
- Prepares reagents necessary for daily operations, performs maintenance when required.
- Ensures an adequate level of supplies for testing.
- Notifies nursing unit and/or physician of critical lab values with complete documentation on report.
- Meets current documentation standards and policies.
- Interacts professionally with the Director of Laboratory, Pathologist, clinical laboratory personnel, co-workers, and other customers.
- Submits appropriate abnormal results to the Director of Laboratory.
- Reviews pending and outstanding reports on every shift and follows up to resolve outstanding specimens.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience
- Associate Degree in Medical Technology
- Experience preferred
Certificates, Licensure, Registrations
- Must have American Society for Clinical Pathology certification
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
