Under the supervision of the designated section head, performs clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. This position reports to the laboratory manager through the section head. The medical technologist also maintains cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental personnel; and other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related field; or qualified as a Technologist under guidelines of the Laboratories Administration of the State of Maryland
- Must be ASCP certified
- Ten or more years of experience
- Ability to work independently
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Demonstrates technical skills and knowledge within the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Urinalysis and Microbiology.
2. Demonstrates technical skills and knowledge of all laboratory equipment.
3. Performs preventative maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of all laboratory equipment problems/issues and notifies supervisor as needed.
4. Analyzes specimens according to established laboratory SOP’s.
5. Ensures all relevant SOPs are followed and reviewed
6. Accurately records results manually and/or electronically in the LIS system.
7. Ensures CAP, UMPA, and GLP (when appropriate) guidelines are followed during laboratory testing.
8. Adheres to protocols for quality control and follows the Laboratory Quality Plan.
9. Ensures all laboratory tests are performed within the established turn-around time.
10. Ensures all pending tests are completed in the assigned work area .
11. Meets annual competency requirements for all appropriate areas.
