Laboratory Technical Supervisor/Lab Manager Job Description

The Technical Supervisor/Lab Manager role is required by CLIA for high complexity testing laboratories, and the position must be delegated in writing by the Laboratory Director. The Technical Supervisor is responsible for compliance and technical aspects of the laboratory, including ensuring proficiency testing program is satisfactory and that laboratory staff are properly trained, and competency assessed according to schedule.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring that test reports include pertinent information for results interpretation, and availability for consultation concerning test results and their interpretation as they relate to specific patient conditions.
- Appropriate test method selection.
- Adequate method verification in order to determine accuracy and precision of test methods.
- Enrollment in a CMS-approved Proficiency Testing (PT) program for all tests performed by the laboratory, and that demonstrates:
- PT samples are tested in accordance with CLIA requirements.
- PT results are submitted within the time frames established by the PT program.
- PT reports are reviewed by the appropriate staff.
- Corrective action plans are followed when PT results are found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory.
- Review and sign off on PT attestations and evaluation summaries.
- Quality Assessment and Quality Control Programs are established and maintained.
- Acceptable analytical test performance is established and maintained for each test system.
- Remedial actions are taken and documented when significant deviations from the laboratory’s established performance characteristics are identified, and patient test results are reported only when the system is functioning properly.
- Personnel have been appropriately trained and demonstrate competency prior to testing patient specimens.
- Policies and procedures are established for monitoring personnel competency in all phases (pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic) of testing to assure ongoing competency of all individuals who perform testing.
- Remedial training or continuing education needs are identified, and training provided.
- An approved procedure manual is available to all personnel.
- Ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
- Manage employees and day to day operation of the lab.
Qualifications
For all specialties/subspecialties except histocompatibility and cytogenetics:
- Licensed MD or DO, or DPM and
- Certified in anatomic and clinical pathology.
For subspecialties of Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Virology, and Parasitology:
- Licensed MD, DO and
- 1 year training or experience in high complexity microbiology with at least 6 months in the appropriate subspecialty.
- Doctoral degree in lab science and
- 1 year training or experience in high complexity microbiology with minimum 6 months in the appropriate subspecialty.
- Master’s degree in lab science and
- 2 years training or experience in high complexity microbiology with minimum 6 months in the appropriate subspecialty.
- Bachelor’s degree in lab science and
- 4 years training or experience in high complexity microbiology with minimum 6 months in the appropriate subspecialty.
For Diagnostic Immunology, Chemistry, Hematology, and Radiobioassay:
- Same education, training or experience requirements as above EXCEPT no 6-month subspecialty requirements.
Working Conditions
- It is reasonable to anticipate exposure to infectious disease/bloodborne pathogens and/or hazardous chemicals in this position.
- Must be comfortable working with COVID-19 specimens.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb stairs, walk, bend down, and lift 20 lbs.
- Visual and auditory acuity.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Good eye/hand coordination and dexterity.
- Ability to appropriately dress to avoid exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily secretions.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $85,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
