Position Overview
This position oversees primary care clinic nursing and nursing case management including chronic disease and specialty care services; provides leadership and supervision of other nursing and support staff; oversees nursing care provided to all patients.
Accountabilities
- Coordinates and participates in total nursing care for patients of all ages, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary nursing and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.
- Follows SEARHC case management model as outlined in the SEARHC Case Management Manual including primary and secondary case management activities for patients. Develops and maintains active two-way communication with patients and providers. Develops and maintains a follow-up program with patients and caregivers in coordination with the primary care provider.
- Administers therapeutic measures as ordered by a physician or other qualified health care provider appropriate within scope of practice and department protocol. Maintains clinic competency in operating specialized equipment appropriate to the clinic. Maintains clinical competency in outpatient ambulatory procedures and treatments which may include intravenous therapy, exercise treadmills, immunizations, employee health screening, and support of minor surgical and gynecological procedures. Maintains a safe and aseptic environment by carrying out sterile and aseptic technique and procedures. Demonstrates correct utilization of computer-based health information system (RPMS).
- Performs medical procedures with an order from a licensed health care practitioner. Competencies and level of skills must be maintained as required by SEARHC policies and procedures, including but not limited to EKG, Clia Waved Labs, package labs for transport, aseptic technique, assist with minor surgical procedures, assist with paps and anoscopy, clean and sterilize equipment, administer enemas, application of oxygen, assist with emergencies, patient teaching and instructions as skill level allows, assist providers in communication with patients, other health care providers, and scheduling referrals and appointments as requested, visual acuity testing, phlebotomy, IV access, medication administration oral and parenteral IV administration, take x-rays, immunization administration, remove sutures and staples, ear lavage-cerumen, impaction removal, and placement and removal of urinary catheterization. Practices Universal Precautions.
- Facilitates and participates in quality improvement activities to monitor compliance with standards of patient care. Facilitates and participates in the competency assessments/remediation of all nursing/support staff. Identifies area needs for personnel, equipment, supplies and training and utilizes such data for program planning. Acts rapidly and effectively in any emergency situation.
- Implements and administers nursing service policies, procedures and standards on the assigned clinical area. As delegated, participates in formulating or revising nursing policy and procedure manuals, job description and performance standards as required. Reviews area manual annually, coordinating revisions.
- Coordinates Nursing Service orientation of new staff monitoring skills and provides guidance for new skill development. Assists in training and career development of staff for new responsibilities and authority as needed. Evaluates performance of assigned staff based on written standards of performance. Recommends awards and communicates potential administrative problems and unresolved employee complaints to the Clinic Administrator.
Position Complexities
Responsible for planning and coordinating patient care activities on a 24-hour basis. Performs duties with maximum independence, exercising professional judgment in determining the need for and type of special action involving patient care and/or personnel. Works with infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
Position Qualifications
Education
- Successful completion of a BSN, Diploma or Associate Nursing Degree.
Experience
- Four (4) years professional nursing experience with a minimum of two (2) years as staff RN in assigned specialty.
- One (1) year with supervisory responsibilities.
Certificates and License
- A valid, current, full, and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska OR licensed in another State and obtain Alaska license within 6 months of hire.
- 80 hours of supervisor/or management training preferred.
- Must have BLS until obtain ACLS. ACLS, PALS certifications; TNCC preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of professional nursing care principles, practices, and procedures in order to assess patient care.
- Knowledge of the customs of the ethnic groups within the various Alaska Native geographic locations and the ability to appreciate cultural differences and their effect on health care delivery.
- Shall perform a variety of responsible nursing care procedures requiring professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments and ability to work independently in completing tasks.
