Overview
The Nurse Summer Externship Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist offers a nine-week paid opportunity for senior nursing students to gain valuable hands-on experience working alongside our experienced team in our five hospitals. This program serves as a significant stepping stone, helping senior nursing students enhance their clinical expertise as they prepare for their transition to become licensed registered nurses.

Eligibility Requirements
- Nursing students entering their final year
- Rising senior enrolled in an accredited Associate or Bachelor of Science nursing program.
- Scheduled to complete Med/Surg clinical by Spring 2025.
- Must be listed as an NA I with the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry by January 31, 2025.
- Must have NA II listed on the North Carolina Board of Nursing by May 12, 2025.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support AHA (BCLS) or American Red Cross BLS certification.
- Must be available for full-time summer employment (3x12 hour shifts plus weekly 4-hour educational session or clinical observation), including rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.

- Opportunity for continued PRN employment as an NA II upon Extern program completion.
Your Impact on Patient Care
In addition to your involvement in our Nurse Summer Extern Program, the extern can expect to have the following responsibilities:
- Assist in implementing the nursing process by providing direct patient care to patients under the Registered Nurse’s (RN) direction.
- Performs specific procedures accurately while being supervised by a Registered Nurse.
- Establish and uphold a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, self, teammates, and facility.
- Ensure complete, accurate, and timely communication of patient information.
- Actively engage with leaders, teammates, patients, and family members in a practical, positive, and professional manner.
- Demonstrate personal responsibility and initiative for performance, professional growth, and advancement.
- Provide age/developmentally appropriate patient care in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.
