General Summary:
The Licensed Practical Nurse I works as a team member with other ancillary personnel under the direction of the registered professional nurse to meet technical care needs for a specified population of patients. These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of, and in partnership with, the registered professional nurse performs all of the following activities as directed, based on the individual needs of the patient.
- Collects clinical data, reporting any unusual results to the registered professional nurse:
- TPR, BP, Pain Scale
- Intake and Output
- Height and weight
- Performs 12 Lead EKGs as directed in CCU, ER and Telemetry units
- Documents findings in appropriate areas of chart, including shift and 24-hour intake and output totals as needed
- Performs assigned therapeutic tasks:
- Lifting, positioning, deep breathing, ambulating patients
- Feeds or assists patients with meals
- Provides enteral feedings and manages feeding equipment
- Reinforces specific Occupational Therapy exercises as directed
- Reinforces specific Physical Therapy exercises as directed
- Reinforces specific patient education information as directed
- Assists with application of restraints as directed
- Oral, nasal and tracheal suctioning
- Foley catheter, ostomy and decubitus care
- Specific pulmonary therapies and application of O2 appliances
- Collects specimens as assigned:
- Performs phlebotomy for blood specimen collection
- Collects urine, stool and sputum specimens as directed
- Draws blood cultures and type/cross match for blood administration
- Assists with the admitting and discharge process:
- Ensures that patient rooms are ready for new admissions after cleaning by Environmental Services
- Completes documentation of admission vital signs, height, weight, and other information as directed
- Arranges for Medicare and taxicabs for patient transport at discharge as directed
- Performs unit-to-unit transfers to non-intensive care areas
- May not take verbal or telephone orders
- May transcribe written orders, which must then be signed by the registered professional nurse
- May accept phone report of lab results and convey results to the registered professional nurse
- Ensures that care is provided for all patients utilizing the attributes of Careful Nursing:
- Trustworthy collaboration
- Health education
- Perfect skill in fostering safety and comfort
- Participatory – authoritative management
- Carries out other duties related to patient care and unit operations as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing required.
- Current LPN License as a practical nurse in the State of Illinois required.
- Current certification in CPR required.
- ACLS certification encouraged, required within first year for critical care and ER.
- Completion of Basic Arrhythmia Course within one (1) year of hire in critical care and ER preferred.
- Knowledge of patients' growth and development needs.
- Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties.
