Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage nursing staff in the Obstetrics, Labor/Delivery, and Nursery care units.
- Ensure compliance with clinical guidelines, hospital policies, and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and administrative teams to optimize patient care and unit efficiency.
- Lead staff education, training, and policy instruction to ensure high-quality care.
- Perform research for policy revision and development to keep patient care procedures up to date.
- Monitor and evaluate patient outcomes, nursing care, and workflow.
- Provide mentorship and supervision to nursing staff, ensuring professional development and adherence to hospital standards.
Must-Haves:
- Licensure/Certification:
- Current Virginia RN license at the time of hire.
- BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, and Fetal Monitoring certifications are required.
- Education/Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience in Obstetrics, Labor/Delivery, and Nursery care settings.
- Supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
- BSN is strongly preferred.
- Special Qualifications:
- Ability to perform research for policy revision and development.
- Strong skills in staff instruction on policies and patient care procedures.
Position Summary:
Under the general supervision and direction of and with the authority from the Chief Nursing Officer, the Nursing Manager performs management functions for the assigned units. The Nurse Manager is responsible for monitoring performance of the staff and all patient care activities of the assigned units. The Nurse Manager is qualified to perform all patient care activities of the assigned unit. The Nurse Manager will perform all functions in a professional and ethical manner and collaborates with other members of the health care team to ensure the provision of quality patient care.
Essential Job Functions:
The Nurse Manager delivers patient care that aligns with established care standards and practices, demonstrating expertise in emergency care for their specific unit. They make decisions to address the needs of the unit and personnel, aiming to achieve patient care and financial objectives. The role requires integrating the department with the hospital's core functions by collaborating with the healthcare team. The Nurse Manager formulates and implements policies and procedures that direct service delivery and coordinates with other departments when necessary. They assess and modify staffing levels to maintain a skilled and competent team. The Nurse Manager evaluates staff qualifications, manages orientation, and promotes ongoing education and training with assistance from the Education Coordinator. They are accountable for the continual assessment and improvement of cost-effective, high-quality patient care services. This responsibility includes performing annual unit assessments, quality improvement evaluations, and offering recommendations for equipment, space, and external patient services. They also participate in marketing and community education specific to the unit. The Chief Nursing Officer may assign additional duties. The Nurse Manager supervises patient care and task completion, conducts job interviews, and makes hiring recommendations. They ensure a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for patients, families, and staff, adhering to safety and infection control standards. The role also involves maintaining continuing education to support their essential functions.
