General Statement (Summary of duties & responsibilities):
Responsibility for day-to-day activities related to the screening and evaluation of all potential organ donors. This includes overseeing the team that provides triaging of organ referrals, staffing for current and potential donation opportunities, coordinating logistics involved with the donation process and collaborating with the healthcare team to optimize each potential donor through donor management goals. Activities include, but are not limited to, being knowledgeable of individual hospital and OPTN policies related to donation of all anatomical gifts; facilitate general activities required throughout the donor recovery period under the direction of the Medical Director and Clinical Operations leadership; collaborate with Family Care, Hospital Development, and Donor Services to foster, promote, and sustain cross-departmental collaboration in support of optimal outcomes.
Education and Work Experience Qualifications:
1. Associates degree in Nursing or biological science or related experience required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Licensed as a registered nurse, respiratory therapist, paramedic, or applicable experience and related training preferred.
2. Minimum one year of critical care or donor management experience
3. Must obtain ACLS certification within one year of employment.
4. CPTC certification preferred and minimum of 2 years of OPO experience in a clinical role.
5. Prior leadership experience in a clinical setting preferred.
6. Expert knowledge of OPO standards & OPTN policy related to OPO responsibilities and organ allocation.
7. Excellent communication skills required. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and to represent the organization publicly.
8. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required.
9. Ability to cope with high levels of stress and able to handle a heavy workload.
10. Ability to travel in light and commercial aircraft or drive his/her personal auto in order to meet all job duties and responsibilities. Current Driver’s license required.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Supervises assigned team members, including:
a. Root cause analysis and corrective action plans related to department functions.
b. Conduct employee appraisal, performance improvement plans, and corrective action plans under the direction of the Manager of Clinical Services.
c. Approve employee expense reports, off call pay, and PTO requests in accordance with STA guidelines and policy.
2. Maintains regular office hours in addition to on-call responsibilities.
3. Actively monitors referral and case activity, providing input for optimal strategies.
4. Participates in donor case review.
5. Participates in Team Huddles.
6. Responsible for critical communications related to donor activity as needed.
7. Reviews information documented in case charts to verify accuracy and completeness of documentation.
8. Ensures proper documentation of training.
9. Ensures adequate staffing for assigned departments.
10. Oversees activities related to potential donor referrals and dispatches staff onsite for completion of consult, approach, various clinical activities, etc.
11. Assist People Services and Education Departments in recruiting, interviewing and training staff.
12. Assists in development of continuing education and training materials, programs and curriculum related to clinical functions.
13. Oversees coordination and execution of research initiatives and Quality Improvement initiatives (PDSA) approved by STA leadership under the direction of Clinical Managers and Director.
14. Completes STA Leadership Development Training.
15. Works with and notifies direct supervisor of complex issues, especially those with potential for significant financial, regulatory, or legal impact to the organization.
