RN Residency, Adult Acute Care (Fall/Winter Cohort)
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is seeking full-time New Grad RNs for our Adult Acute Care Residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A New Graduate Nurse is either a current nursing student nearing graduation from an RN program or a recent graduate with less than six months of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Facility: Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, an 885-bed tertiary-care hospital in Winston-Salem and the region's only Level 1 trauma center, serves as the cornerstone of a globally recognized health system that integrates exceptional patient care, cutting-edge research, and comprehensive medical education through a network of community hospitals, specialty locations, and the renowned Wake Forest School of Medicine.
- Residency Program: New Graduate RNs at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist receive supportive training led by dedicated nurse educators, including clinical orientation, specialty-specific learning, and skill-building in clinical decision-making, teamwork, communication, and career development.
The Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Adult Acute Care units include:
- 8 Ardmore East: The 26-bed general medical-surgical unit provides comprehensive care for a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. Staffing includes 6 RNs, 4 NAs, 1 US, and a dedicated charge RN available 24/7. The unit handles pre- and post-operative care, chronic illness management, and general medical needs.
- 8 North Tower: This 19-bed Nephrology unit specializes in caring for patients with kidney-related conditions. The team includes 5 RNs, 2 NAs, 1 US, and a dedicated charge RN available 24/7. Care encompasses managing kidney disease, electrolyte imbalances, and other nephrological issues. The majority of patients here are on dialysis, which is provided in a specific inpatient dialysis unit onsite.
- 8 Reynolds Tower: This is a 29-bed unit specializing in kidney transplant care. The team provides comprehensive support to ensure optimal kidney function and patient recovery. In addition to kidney transplant patients, you will care for a wide variety of other medical/surgical patients, as well as patients in observation.
- 9 Ardmore East: This is a 24-bed General Medicine/Respiratory/Telemetry unit serving adults and geriatrics with conditions such as respiratory issues, diabetes, GI, renal, and wound care. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5 to 1:6, with a maximum of 6 patients per nurse.
- 9 North Tower A and B: This unit is divided into two parts, Side A and Side B. Side A is a 14-bed medical observation unit which aims for a stay of 48-72 hours, though some may stay longer due to ongoing medical issues. Side B of the unit is also medical observation. It contains 10 beds and provides care for patients with medical issues who may also have some Behavioral Health needs. For instance, they may exhibit aggressive behavior, challenging dementia cases, or suicidal/homicidal ideation. The unit is locked for safety, and patients are transferred to the Psychiatry Unit if behaviors persist after medical concerns are addressed.
- 10 Ardmore East: This is a 16-bed medical unit, where patients are usually admitted from the ED or step down from the ICU. The unit aims to prepare patients for discharge or continue care as needed. The team includes Interns, Residents, Medical Students, and Attending Physicians.
- 5th Floor Comprehensive Cancer Center: This is a 10-bed Med-Surg Unit with a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio that cares for ICU, burn unit, transplant, and overflow surgical oncology patients. Staff is very team-oriented with a supportive Charge Nurse on staff.
- Sticht Center A-Side: Adult Behavioral Health Unit that provides care to patients with various mental health disorders and addictions. A variety of supportive therapy teams are part of the programming, along with team nursing led by Charge RNs to provide top care on all shifts.
- Sticht Center B-Side: Acute Care for Elderly (ACE) Unit is a post-surgical unit where hip and knee replacements, as well as other post-surgical patients are treated in preparation of discharge to home or further care in a short-term rehab. This is a busy med-surg environment with team nursing led by a Charge RN for best care and outcomes.
Job Summary
The New Graduate Nurse provides nursing care to patients using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). They lead and direct other assigned team members and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to provide age/developmentally appropriate care in accordance with nursing standards of care and practice.
What You’ll Need
- Less than 6 months of RN experience
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing; BSN preferred.
- Registered Nurse licensure from the State of North Carolina Board of Nursing
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire, per unit guidelines
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 1 year of hire, per unit guidelines
