Job Description
Job Summary:
The Clinical Lab Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of procedures and services that may include point of service, minor point of care testing, specimen procurement, and processing. Must be skilled in laboratory/hospital computer procedures, pediatric phlebotomy, and able to effectively communicate with all customers of the laboratory including patients and parents. Functions as a member of the Specimen Procurement and Processing team and actively supports the Hospital’s Continuous Quality and Customer Service goals.
Job Responsibilities:
- Performs pre-analytical specimen preparation and accessioning of specimens.
- Verifies specimen acceptability and prepares samples for storage.
- Maintains telephone inquiries in a professional manner and serves as a resource for customer information.
- Maintains an appropriate inventory of supplies in the work area.
- Supports new staff in orientation and training.
- Complies with safety, hazardous materials, and infection control policies.
- Communicates effectively with patients, parents, and team members.
- May be expected to perform duties within any Lurie Children’s facility as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Formal training as Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist. Associate’s degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology preferred.
- Meets all regulatory requirements for moderate complexity testing.
- Good verbal and written communication skills required.
