JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for maintaining a safe and legally compliant QA/QC analytical laboratory, overseeing day-to-day operations, performing chemical and physical analyses required for product development and quality control, and collaborating with the R&D group on new lab procedures and analytical support for R&D initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Continually work to improve the safety and legal compliance of the QA/QC analytical laboratory.
- Establish goals and coordinate laboratory administration, including purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Ensure compliance with organizational goals and applicable regulations.
- Prepare laboratory activity reports and make recommendations for improvements.
- Work within established budgetary guidelines.
- Participate in laboratory standardization and quality improvement initiatives.
- Develop, train, and mentor laboratory staff.
- Oversee the quality of products made throughout the plant.
- Maintain laboratory schedule and manage shift changes.
- Participate in performance evaluations; schedule and approve overtime; take disciplinary action as necessary.
- Perform quality checks on lab personnel.
- Create and send Certificates of Analysis for all orders.
- Advise on instrument and procedure improvements.
- Commission new instruments as needed.
- Collaborate with R&D on new product initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a physical science preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years related experience and/or training required; 2 years management experience required.
- Experience with QC methods in the laboratory and handling hazardous substances.
- Preferred: experience in XRF, TGA, and ICP.
- SAP and LIMS experience preferred.
Language/Math/Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Working knowledge of basic mathematics and ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to apply the scientific method; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Computer Skills:
- Intermediate personal computer skills including record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, and spreadsheet applications.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel.
