JOB DESCRIPTION
GENERAL SUMMARY
Sonographer responsibilities include using sonographic equipment to record images of patients for diagnostic purposes. Performs sonographic examinations to locate, evaluate and record critical functional, pathological, and anatomical data. Records test results, inspects and maintains equipment, and orders supplies when needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/COMPETENCIES
- Select and examine images, search for differences between healthy and pathological areas and determine if the scope of the exam should be extended based on preliminary findings.
- Present the sonograms and preliminary findings to Physicians.
- Complete the appropriate documentation and maintain patients’ medical records.
- Assist Physicians and healthcare teams during invasive procedures.
- Maintain and clean the sonographic equipment.
- Perform medical procedures, such as administering oxygen, taking vital signs and giving emergency treatments.
- Insert patient information and personal data into the computer to maintain examination records.
- Assess the patient’s physical, psychological and educational needs in order to obtain appropriate history prior to each exam.
- Explain process to patient, instruct and assist patient in positioning for exam.
- Monitor images for quality and adjust as needed.
- Record optimal anatomical images that are transferred to the PACS system, disc, strip printout or film to obtain a permanent record.
- Provide relevant technical information about the patient and exam to facilitate in the interpretation of the study by the radiologist.
- Perform other position-related duties as assigned.
- Adhere to high standards of ethical conduct and comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including the Solaris Health Code of Conduct and HIPAA regulations.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Registration with one of the two recognized medical diagnostic sonography organizations is preferred: The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography or the American Registry of Radiological Technologists.
- BLS certification required; ACLS preferred.
- Current R.D.M.S. Certification.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Previous Ultrasound Technologist experience strongly preferred; six months to one year related experience preferred. New grads will be considered.
