GENERAL PURPOSE – Provide surgical assistance and facilitate during surgical and medical procedures. Be knowledgeable about equipment, instrumentation and supplies required to perform specific procedures. Be knowledgeable about asepsis and maintain sterile technique during each procedure. Assist the surgeon as necessary.

- Performs all duties in a conscientious, courteous manner to promote and maintain positive internal and external customer relations.
- Demonstrates effective time management and is proactive in prioritizing workload and meeting productivity requirements.
- Demonstrates initiative and problem solving skills, using sound judgment.
- Assist in maintaining the physicians’ preference cards.
- Clean and maintain the equipment in operating condition according to departmental procedures and infection control policies.
- Expedite room turnover.
- Assist in care and handling of supplies, equipment and instruments.
- Promote cooperation and communication, utilizing proper channels, with OR staff, the entire health care team, and patients
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Standing 45% of the time; walking 45% of the time; sitting 10% of the time; Lifting and carrying 5% of the time and able to carry up to 35 pounds [lifting of patients is done frequently throughout the day and may involve lifting off of the bed for skin care, transferring to bed, commode or chair, assisting unstable patient to bathroom, repositioning patients in bed.* More than one person is required for weight greater than 35 pounds]; Pushing/pulling 15% of the time [may involve moving beds, commodes, shower chairs, wheelchairs with or without patients. Also involves moving and rolling patients up to 300 pounds in bed.*]; Bending, stooping, twisting 15% of the time; Reaching and handling 15% of the time.
- Hearing: within normal limits with or without use of corrective hearing devices.
- Vision: adequate to read 12-point type with or without use of corrective lenses.
- Must be able to verbally interact with staff, clients and public.
- Manual dexterity of hands/fingers for writing, computer input.
- Frequently needs sense of smell to assess patient conditions (i.e. infections) and in determining potentially hazardous conditions
