Overview
The Child Life Specialist promotes the optimum development of children and adolescents through individual and group activities, which facilitate and/or enhance developmental, psychosocial, and recreation needs of children and adolescents. The Specialist educates, advocates for, and maintains a therapeutic milieu appropriate to the varying developmental, psychosocial, and cultural needs of patients and/or families. The Specialist develops and implements interventions, which promote mastery, self-expression, and adaptive coping for patients and family members.

Responsibilities
- Maintains quality and effectiveness of patient services through implementation of and compliance with all departmental and/or Institute policies and procedures, PI activities, and yearly program assessment.
- Facilitates the orientation, adjustment, and ongoing support of patients and families to the hospital, health care experiences, illness or disability.
- Assesses, plans, implements, communicates, and documents individual treatment goals, plans and outcome appropriate to the developmental, psychosocial, culture/needs of children and adolescents.
- Provides procedure preparation, support, and accompanies whenever necessary to support the patient and/or families.
- Interprets the mission, goals and philosophical base of the department, professional group, and/or Institute whenever necessary.
- Provides support counseling, training, role-modeling for patients, families and/or peer as needed within the departments accepted areas of expertise.
- Attends and actively participates intra/interdisciplinary in-service education and/or meetings as assigned.
- Maintains a safe, therapeutic milieu in all patient areas and programs within the Institute and/or other community facilities.
Qualifications
- Individual must demonstrate competence across all age groups due to the diversity of the children and families served by KKI.
- Clinical care focus is on the neonate, pediatric, and adolescent populations, as well as some adults with disabilities.
EDUCATION:
- BA/BS in Child Life/Child Development, Education, Recreation or related field required.
EXPERIENCE:
- One year experience with pediatric population in hospital, structured recreation or educational setting.
RELATED TRAINING:
- Completion of child life internship under the supervision of a certified child life specialist.
- CPR and Choking Infants/Children/Adults certification required.
- Must be certified by the Association of Child Life Professionals, and/or eligible for certification within one year of hire.
