Description
This position is in the Technical Division/Laboratory. The duties include, but are not limited to: analysis of unit process samples and product certification samples according to ASTM methods, Standard Operating Procedures derived from the ASTM methods, AASHTO, AMS, API and various other in-house procedures.
- Performs physical and chemical analyses with a high degree of precision and accuracy following ASTM methods, Standard Operating Procedures derived from the ASTM methods, AASHTO, AMS, API and various other in-house procedures.
- Conducts the business of the laboratory in an expeditious and reasonable manner based on directives and requests of the Laboratory Supervisors, Laboratory Manager, Operations Superintendent, Unit Team Leaders, Fuels Coordinator, etc.
- Works with a Lead Laboratory Technician or Chemist and is responsible for the documentation of test results and timely reporting of those results to customers.
- Understands how the results affect the operation of the refinery and has the ability to communicate this to Operations.
- Recognizes when the quality of the analysis is suspect and takes corrective actions.
- Works with a Lead Laboratory Technician or Chemist on product certification and release.
- Sets up, runs, and shuts down laboratory equipment.
- Safely handles and transports chemicals, reagents, and samples of process streams and finished products.
- Performs housekeeping in personal work areas as well as assigned areas of the laboratory.
- Maintains a working knowledge of safety data sheets that describe the hazards of the materials used in the laboratory.
- Works overtime as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
This position is hourly nonexempt status, which means you are eligible for overtime pay.
The rate for this position is $48.51 and represents Valero’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of expected compensation at the time of this posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of job-related factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications and experience.
Qualifications
- Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at the Valero Benicia Refinery, required.
- Bachelor's (or higher level) degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Laboratory Science required.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Minimum one year of experience in an analytical laboratory required.
- Knowledge of ASTM and AASHTO methods for petroleum products preferred.
- Knowledge of water analysis procedures preferred.
Position level and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
