Job Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will serve as a key member of the patient care team in an ambulatory setting. The CMA will work closely with providers across multiple specialties as well as with other clinical and administrative staff to deliver an exceptional patient experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture of Service-Oriented, Trust, Empathy, Safety, Inclusion, and Communication.
Job Responsibilities:
Clinical and Front Desk Support Duties
- Greet patients and visitors, and answer telephone calls promptly.
- Prepare patients for their visit including pre-visit organization of information, performing patient escort & rooming functions, documenting chief complaints and updating EMR as requested.
- Assist patients with walking, transferring, dressing, collecting and processing specimens and point of care testing, preparing for exam, etc. Serve as chaperone in the exam room as requested.
- Assist physicians or other clinical staff with examinations, procedures, and department-specific therapies as requested.
- Perform phlebotomy duties and point-of-care tests such as urinalysis and pregnancy tests.
- Perform additional check out functions such as scheduling, referrals and additional tasks as needed.
- Prepare, label and deliver collected specimens.
- Ensure proper labs are drawn and documented in Epic. Assist in troubleshooting missing labs from Epic.
- Enter orders in Epic.
- Notify physicians and nurses of emergencies and perform first aid.
- Process, sterilize and organize instruments daily.
- Prepare and maintain medical charts.
- Copy and mail requests for medical records.
- Perform EKGs and/or spirometry as requested.
- Enter accurate charges into the EHR.
- Assist providers or other clinical staff with in-office procedures as requested.
- Obtain prior authorizations for medications as requested.
- Maintain diagnostic equipment, perform QC testing and maintain supporting documentation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Administrative and/or Role-Specific Duties
- Maintain daily refrigerator/freezer logs, monthly AED log and other QA logs.
- Perform additional specialty-specific duties as assigned.
Please note: In some practices and based on operational need, the CMA may be required to perform full scope of front desk duties in conjunction with or in lieu of CMA duties (e.g., check-in, pre-registration, appointment scheduling and related follow-up).
Job Requirements:
- High school graduate or equivalency and graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program, plus specialized certifications as needed.
- CMA must be certified by a credentialing body.
- Current BCLS/AED certification required.
- Must demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Must have excellent communication & interpersonal skills and a strong ability to deescalate stressful situations.
- Basic proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Electronic Health Systems, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Email systems, etc.
- Will provide coverage as requested throughout practices (multiple sites and flexible schedule).
- Associate degree or additional academic coursework preferred.
- Previous medical assisting experience in an outpatient setting preferred.
- Proficiency with OSHA standards including disposal of biohazard waste preferred.
- Multi-specialty experience in a high-volume setting preferred.
- Prior EMR experience, EPIC preferred.
Hourly Rate Ranges: $21.00 - $33.17
