The Physician Assistant (PA) will be based at the Toronto General Site within the ATC Program. The ATC Program performs over 700 transplants a year including lung, heart, liver, kidney and pancreas/islet, small bowel transplants.
Working under the direction of the supervising Transplant Attending, and in accordance with the delegated medical act, the principal responsibilities of the PA include utilizing and demonstrating a theoretical knowledge base and an advanced level of clinical competence in caring for Transplant patients. Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to: conducting patient interviews; taking medical histories; performing physical examinations; ordering and interpreting tests; diagnosing and treating illness; performing therapeutic or diagnostic procedures; providing medical orders and prescriptions; and counseling on preventative health care.
The PA will work with the supervisor to ensure that all aspects of the care provided are clinically indicated and in keeping with best practice guidelines. Throughout their careers, PAs also take part in quality improvement initiatives, policy development, education, research, health advocacy, professional development, and leadership opportunities. The PA will function as a vital part of this collaborative team of Physicians, Surgeons, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Fellows and Allied Health Professionals providing care to Transplant patients in a physician-extender role. Their role will include, but will not be limited to, comprehensive inpatient medical management of transplant patients including assisting with patient admissions and discharges. The PA will have the opportunity to join a team that focuses on improvement and understands the importance of education and training in each member of the team. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities and will be expected to develop their potential as a leader and teacher in the ATC Program. There is also potential for involvement in many of the research activities. Successful individuals will be required to work 8 to 12-hour shifts (days, evenings).
- Must be a new graduate (Physician Assistant Career Start Program)
- At minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree in an accredited Physician Assistant program or recognized equivalent
- Must be a Canadian Certified Physician Assistant (CCPA) and/or an American Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C)
- Must be a current member of the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA)
- Maintain certification and CCPA/PA-C designation by completing the required CPD/CME credits
- Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
- Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
- Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
- Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
- Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills
- Experience in a surgical setting preferred
