Performs highly advanced (senior-level) clinical nursing work. Work involves assessing, planning, and providing comprehensive patient care independently or in collaboration with other health care professionals. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment while ensuring department protocol is forwarded.
Conducts examinations of patients to obtain information about their physical conditions and provides treatment to patients by making tentative diagnoses and decisions following patients’ examinations.
Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal and prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval.
Obtains, compiles, and records patients’ medical data, including health history, progress notes, and results of physical examination and administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, electrocardiograms, and laboratory tests.
Counsels and instructs patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
Consults with supervising physicians, specialists, and other health professionals as appropriate.
Visits and observes patients, updates charts, orders therapy, and reports back to physician and may prescribe medication if protocol permits.
Experience/Qualifications Required:
- Graduation from an accredited educational program for nurse practitioners. Must be licensed as a nurse practitioner by the State of Texas.
- Knowledge of methods and procedures in the field of general medicine and of the principles of the development, implementation, and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans.
- Ability to examine, diagnose, and treat physical or mental disorders; to interpret laboratory analyses and x- rays; to perform surgical procedures; to communicate effectively; and to supervise the work of others.
- Skill in the care and treatment of patients, in the use of medical diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment, and in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.
