Interfaith Chaplain and Director of Muslim Life at Macalester College
Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is seeking to hire a full-time Interfaith Chaplain and Director of Muslim Life. Macalester has roots and relationships in the Presbyterian Church and is home to a Chaplaincy that is Multifaith in expression and values. This position will report to the College Chaplain and Associate Dean and serve as a key strategic partner across campus and offer vision for and implementation of offerings that enrich both Muslim Life and campus wide engagement. The Interfaith Chaplain and Director of Muslim Life will support the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life mission, which values exploration of wholeness, belonging and purposeful living.
Responsibilities
- Articulate and reflect the values of the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life (CRSL) across campus. This position will provide strategic learning opportunities, establish campus partnerships, serve on committees and collaborate in a manner that positively influences campus culture.
- Lead collaborative efforts with the team of Chaplains to create a five-year vision for interfaith learning and worldview exploration. This position will provide supervision for student Multifaith Program Assistants.
- Provide budgetary management and oversight for interfaith initiatives.
- Embody enthusiastic spiritual leadership and teaching. This will include thoughtful facilitation of dialogue, meaningful framing of religious, spiritual and philosophical issues of the day, and the ability to hold space for students to explore multiple identities.
- Serve as a Chaplain to the campus community, this includes students, staff, faculty and alumni. Commitment to pastoral confidentiality is required. This position is designated as a confidential on campus resource (Title IX).
- Serve in the stead of the College Chaplain, as requested. This position reports directly to the College Chaplain.
- Prepare spoken remarks, teaching and prayers for college events, as invited.
- Author departmental reports and assessment of programs and initiatives.
- Serve as a Chaplain (and advisor) to Muslim Student Association. Cultivate meaningful relationships and empower student-led initiatives.
- Provide vision, direction and ensure leadership for Jumu’ah prayers and Halaqua study on campus. Mentor and cultivate student leadership.
- Ensure practitioners of Islam are able to observe practices, without undue burden. This position will ensure best-practices for inclusion, equity and foster a sense of community and belonging. Provide budget management for all Muslim specific religious observance, which is funded by the CRSL.
- Creatively open pathways for inter/intra-religious dialogue for practitioners of Islam.
- Implement equitable policies that support cultural and religious practices at Macalester, as needed. Provide direction and leadership for partnerships with Dining Services, Residential Life, International Student Programs and Study Away.
- Promote awareness and understanding of Islamic tradition(s) and culture(s) across campus.
- Cultivate partnerships within the diverse Muslim community of the Twin Cities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Master’s degree in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, or Theology required.
- Clinical Pastoral Education preferred.
- Muslim Chaplaincy Training preferred or evidence of professional preparation for chaplaincy.
- Demonstrated experience as a teacher within the Muslim tradition.
- Understand and appreciate the diverse religious, social, and cultural expressions within Islam.
- Experience providing sensitive and confidential counsel, support and care to diverse populations (ethnic, racial, sexual, gender, cultural, religious, ability).
- Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively in public contexts and digital forums.
- Evidence of commitment to interfaith education, learning and engagement.
- Ability to collaborate as part of a Multifaith Team.
- Must be available to work some nights, weekends, holidays, special events, and respond to after-hours emergencies.
